George Washington University Scholarships 2018
George Washington University, named in honor of one of the United States’ founding fathers, is a coeducational private research university located in Foggy Bottom neighborhood of the capital city, Washington, DC. The school was originally founded in 1821 as “Columbian College” with a charter from President James Monroe, but later changed the name with the attempt to honor the US’ first president. Currently, George Washington University scholarships are available for both domestic international students.
A total of 27,000 students attend George Washington, which is a majority of graduate students. There are 16,000 graduates compared to 11,000 undergraduates at the school. They are taught by 2,600 faculty who lead over forty different academic departments. The departments vary from Anesthesiology to Dermatology to Forensic Sciences. The college boasts over 450 student organizations and the country’s largest chapters of College Republicans and College Democrats.
GWU has three campuses, with the main one being in the heart of Washington, DC. The other two satellite campuses are located in Foxhall (outskirt of Washington) and Ashburn, Virginia. It is organized into fourteen colleges and schools. Each one has an individual dean and academic staff. George Washington boasts the 11th oldest Medical School in the US, as well as the oldest and largest college of Arts and Sciences. Other schools include the Elliott School of International Affairs, School of Public Health, and School of Public and Media Affairs.
George Washington has an endowment of $1.73 billion USD, and dedicates a large amount to their 21 different research centers and institutes. The Heart & Vascular Institute receives over $5 million annually towards research, which is just a fraction of the school’s total funding amount. Some of these funds go toward George Washington University scholarships for international students to recruit these scholars worldwide.
Due to the intense programs in law and politics, the school has produced many important figures. This includes six current Senators and ten members of the House of Representatives. Other figures include former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, and eighteen state governors.
