Sogang University

Sogang University is an excellent university in Korea consistently ranking in the top ten universities in Korea and ranking 2nd for employee reputation in QS World University rankings. Founded in 1960 by Jesuits, Sogang University has close connections with other Jesuit universities such as Georgetown University and Boston College. These connections help students in Sogang to study abroad in excellent universities and also allows collaboration between these universities.

There are total of 11,516 undergraduate students, 3,921 graduate students, 439 full-time professors, and 739 part-time professors in Sogang. These students and professors are located in 27 departments in 9 schools for undergraduate students and 1 graduate school, 6 professional graduate schools, and 5 special graduate schools.

Although there are many diverse campuses, Sogang University is probably most diverse campuses in Korea. There are many English classes available for international students at Sogang University. All the courses in International Korean Studies and the Graduate School of International Studies are taught in English. Also, many courses in other departments are taught in English as well. This will help international students who are not familiar with the Korean language. They will be less pressured to learn Korean in order to follow classes, but they could learn slowly by interacting with their professors and students.

Even though its history is relatively short compared to other universities, Sogang University has produced many excellent alumni. Also, Top Universities have ranked it to be 57th in Asia and 441st-450th in the World. The Times Higher Education has ranked it to become 95th in Asia and 601st-800th in the World. Although it is not ranked as high in the world ranking, there are tens of thousands of universities around the world. Taking that into account, Sogang University is one of the best universities in Korea, in Asia, and in the world.

Tuition

The tuition fee for Sogang University is relatively high. The tuition fee for undergraduate students is $8,000 per year, and the tuition fee for graduate students is $12,000 per year. Sogang University Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Korean Government Scholarship (Before Admissions) 

  • Scholarship Amount- Tuition, monthly stipend, airplane ticket, insurance, and other fees
  • Eligibility- Undergraduate international students who will be studying for 4 years.
  • Number of Recipients- 170 students per year (Please note that this number includes students studying in other universities)
  • Selection Process- Applicants submit their applications to the Korean Embassy in their country. Embassy makes the first selection, and the National Institute for International Education make the final selection.

  • Scholarship Amount- Tuition and fees, guarantee to live in dormitory
  • Eligibility- Top ranking student
  • Selection Process- Apply to Sogang University as an international student

 

Global Scholarship I (Enrolled Students) 

  • Scholarship Amount- Up to tuition
  • Eligibility- Acquired at least 12 credits, have 2.5 GPA or above
  • Selection Process- International students with excellent grades will receive this scholarship.

 

Global Scholarship II (Enrolled Students) 

  • Scholarship Amount- Up to tuition
  • Eligibility- Acquired at least 12 credits, have 2.5 GPA or above

Scholarship A (Before Admissions)

  • Scholarship Amount- tuition
  • Selection Process- There is no separate application. All international students are eligible for this scholarship by just applying.

 

Sogang-POSCO Scholarship (Before Admissions)

  • Scholarship Amount- Tuition and Stipend for 2 years
  • Eligibility- Student who have received their bachelor’s degree from an Asian country and are citizens of an Asian country.
  • Number of Recipients- 4 students each year
  • Selection Process- Students need to submit an application to POSCO. Please refer to POSCO’s website.

 

Sogang-KOGAS Scholarship (Before Admissions) 

  • Scholarship Amount- Tuition and Stipend for 2 years
  • Eligibility- Students whose parents are not Korean citizens.
  • Number of Recipients- 1 student each year
  • Selection Process- Students need to submit an application to KOGAS. Please refer to KOGAS’s website

 

Scholarship A (After Admission) 

  • Scholarship Amount- Up to tuition
  • Eligibility- English Proficiency test for those who did not graduate from university in English speaking country, and minimum GPA of 3.5 for Master’s and 4.0 for Ph.D.
  • Selection Process- There is no separate application. Everyone is eligible to compete for this scholarship if they meet the eligibility requirements.
