Chevening Scholarships 2019

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are government scholarships that are provided by the United Kingdom. Since 1983, scholars from 144 countries have been awarded this prestigious scholarship. After receiving a great education in the United Kingdom, these Chevening Scholarship recipients have gone back to their own country and have achieved great progress. They have become leaders in business, politics, service, science, and in other fields. Why? Because of two things: the superb education that they have received and their zeal for education and service.

Many students want to study in the UK because of their phenomenal education. Universities such as Oxford and Cambridge have been one of the best universities in the world as well as the most well-known. Other UK universities are known for and do have great professors and curriculum. The faculty at these universities are one of the best and have made great advances in their own fields. The curriculum has evolved through hundreds of years so that the students can learn the latest information in the best way. By attending these universities, the Chevening Scholarship recipients have been and will succeed.

Also, think about why they have been chosen as recipients. They have been chosen because they have shown that they are enthusiastic about learning and have gone an extra mile to get extra knowledge. The have shown to be great servants and have volunteered many hours to help others. Also, their character has been shown to be superb based on the reference that they’ve received. So, because of these character, they have been chosen and now, many of them are very successful.

Do you have what it takes to be a winner of the Chevening Scholarship? If you do not think so, keep working so that you are confident. If you do think you can, push harder so that you will have a better chance. Enough of the introduction. Let’s learn more about the scholarship.

Chevening Scholarships vs. Chevening Fellowships

United Kingdom Government gives out two government scholarships, which are Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships. Since many students are confused about the difference, I would like to cover the difference before I begin.

The main difference is the target group of two different scholarships. The Chevening Scholarships are for students who want to enroll in graduate degrees. The Chevening Fellowships are for people in the middle of their career to further their expertise. Also, students participating in Chevening Scholarships do receive a degree, while students participating in Chevening Fellowship do not receive a degree. Therefore, students who want to further their education by receiving a degree should apply for Chevening Scholarships.

To read about these differences in the official scholarship page, visit the Chevening Scholarship website. Since most students will pursue Chevening Scholarships since this scholarship awards degrees, I will write only about Chevening Scholarships in this article.

Chevening Scholarship Amount

This section is what the potential scholarship applicants want to know the most. Chevening Scholarships are very generous to the recipients partially because it is a government-sponsored scholarship.

  1. Tuition
  2. Airplane ticket
  3. Monthly stipend to cover living expenses
  4. Arrival allowance
  5. Cost of Visa
  6. If required, cost of tuberculosis test

For more information about the scholarship amount, visit the Term and Conditions.

Eligibility

So, let’s learn about what criteria that you need to meet to be eligible for Chevening Scholarships. There are several criteria that you need to meet, and here is the brief summary.

Conditions that you need to meet before you apply:

  • Be from an eligible country
  • Graduated from an undergraduate degree with good grades
  • Two years of work experience

Conditions that you need to meet after you apply:

  • Need to apply to at least three UK universities and get accepted into one unconditionally.
  • Meet the minimum English Requirements.
  • Go back to your country after your studies if you do receive the Chevening Scholarships.

Take note that you can apply and get accepted to UK universities AFTER you apply. This also is the case with the English requirement. They do not require you to meet the English requirement at the time of application. You can study it and get the score you need after you apply. For more information about eligibility requirements, visit the Eligibility Criteria.

Work Experience

Two eligibility requirements that students most frequently ask about are the work experience and the English Proficiency Requirement. Since most students seek Chevening Scholarships since they want a degree, you only need two years of work experience.

Eligible Types of Work Experience

  1. Full-time employment
  2. Part-time employment
  3. Voluntary Work
  4. Paid or Unpaid Internships
  5. Work Experience can be completed before, during, or after your undergraduate degree.

Minimum Hours of Work Experience

For Chevening Scholarships, you need 2,800 hours of work experience. If you did not work full-time, you will need more than two years of work experience to satisfy minimum hours of work experience.

For more information about work experience criteria, visit the Work Experience Criteria.

English Proficiency Requirements

So, what score that you need? You need at least 6.5 band on IELTS or 79 on the TOEFL iBT. These have minimum requirements for each section as well. There are other tests that are accepted, and you can view all this information at English Language Requirements. If you do need help with the English Test, I highly recommend looking at the TOEFL Section.

Please note that this is the minimum for Chevening Scholarships. You might need a higher score on the English Proficiency Exams to be admitted to universities in the United Kingdom. So, if you do meet the minimum requirements, I highly suggest studying more to get a higher score.
