Kwangwoon University is a private university located in Seoul, Korea. It was founded in 1934 as Chosun Radio Training Center, a school that promoted the knowledge of radio technology. In 1940, it was renamed as the Chosun Institute of Radio Engineering. When this institute has grown and included many different academic fields, it was given university status and became Kwangwoon University in 1987.
This university was the first to teach computer technology to students. Since then, Kwangwoon University has kept its excellence in the field of computer science and IT and became one of the best Korean universities in those fields. There are many successful alumni in the field of computer science including Co-CEO of Samsung and LG. Because of those alumni, they have many exchange programs with big electronics companies such as Samsung and LG, and many students take advantage of that opportunity. Although this university is known for its computer science field, it provides an excellent education in other fields also.
Since its founding, Kwangwoon University has grown to be a large institution having 8,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students taught by 700 professors. These students and professors are located in various academic departments and graduate schools in the main campus of Seoul.
This university is ranked relatively high in many ranking systems. 4icu has ranked Kwangwoon University by 42nd in Korea, and Top University has ranked it to be 271st-280th in Asia. Although this ranking is not very high, the rankings for individual fields such as computer science and IT are ranked much higher than the general rankings.
