A national university, Zhejiang University is one of China’s most selective institutions as well as a member of the C9 League and the Yangtze Delta Universities Alliance. It was founded in 1897 by Lin Qi, and has been reformed many times. US News and World Report has ranked the school at 159th on their list of Best Global Universities. Now, Zhejiang University scholarships are available for highly qualified international students.
Roughly 46,000 students attend Zhejiang University. This figure is comprised of about 23,000 undergraduates, 23,000 graduates, and an additional 8,600 doctoral students. Roughly 3,350 academic staff lead the school, coming out to about a 15:1 student to faculty ratio. Additionally, there are 3,400 international students, making the body very diverse. The school is affiliated with dozens of institutions nationally and internationally, as well as several other colleges and seven hospitals.
There are over 500 programs offered at ZU, including 181 doctoral program degrees and 264 programs for master’s degrees. Those programs are offered at Zhejiang’s seven different campuses. Their locations are Yuquan, Xixi, Haining International, Huajiachi, Zhejiang, Zijin’gang (main), and Zhoushan.
The school is one of the wealthiest in the country, with an astounding endowment of 10.9 billion yuan. Research is massive at ZU, and the school consistently spends roughly 2.8 billion yuan annually on research alone. The school funds 12 academic disciplines for research, and is ranked among the top 1% in the world in 15 different disciplines. This large endowment also provides for Zhejiang University scholarships for international students who will contribute to the university.
Graduates of the school have gone on to be some of the most successful people in the country, due to the rigors and challenges of the schooling itself. Alumni include Huang Fu (President and Premier of the Republic of China), Chen Yi (Chief Executive and Garrison Commander of Taiwan), Lu Yongxiang (President of Chinese Academy of Science), and famous horticulturist Chen Hang (who also won the Veitch Memorial Medal in 1990).
