As a public research university in Shanghai, Shanghai University is one of China’s top schools. It was founded in 1922, and is a research-intensive comprehensive university. QS World University Rankings has Shanghai University ranked 411th in the world, and as high as 75th in Asia. On QS’ list of young university rankings, the school is ranked 51st globally and 1st in the country. Now, there are many Shanghai University scholarships that international students qualify!

There are roughly 37,800 students attending Shanghai University. This consists of 23,000 undergraduates, 12,000 graduates, and about 3,000 other students. They are taught by roughly 3,000 academic staff, which is about a 12:1 student to faculty ratio. SHU offers roughly 300 different programs, including mechatronics, life sciences, and information engineering. These programs are offered for students seeking bachelors, masters, PhDs, MBAs, and post-doctoral degrees. Shanghai University has three campuses, with all of them located in Shanghai. Their locations consist of one in Baoshan, one in Yanchang, and one in Jiading. These campuses are broken down into 28 different schools, including the renowned Qian Weichang College, Law School, and the Sino-European School of Technology. The libraries at SHU consist of more than 3 million volumes in total, one of the largest university libraries on the planet.

The school is funded extremely well, and is home to an astounding 72 different research institutes that are approved by the State Science Commision. Annually, about CNY¥450 million is devoted to strictly scientific research funding. This figure is the 13th highest in the country, and includes funding for the Nano-Science & Technology Center, Computer Center, and the Key Lab of Microstructure Research Center.

The rigors of the academic programs at SHU have led to many alumni finding careers in politics, government, and more. Alumni include Yang Shangkun (4th President of People’s Republic of China), Chen Yifei (film director), and Xin Zhou (CEO of E-House China).
