Located in Xiamen of Fujian province, Xiamen University is the first Chinese university that was founded by overseas Chinese citizens. Tan Kah Kee founded the school in 1921 as Amoy University, but it was later changed. Nature Index has ranked XU in the top 100 worldwide schools and top 10 in just China. The population of the school is just over 28,000, with 18,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduates. The school’s prestigious programs have led to a plethora of students going for top degrees, with 1,500 currently enrolled in the PhD program. There are 4,500 academic staff, for about a 4:1 student to faculty ratio. The school is recognized and accredited by the Association of MBAs as well as EQUIS. Many of these students receive Xiamen University scholarships to help finance their studies.
Xiamen University has three campuses, with the main one in the Siming District of Xiamen. The other two locations are in Xiang’an and Zhangzhou, with plans to set up a Malaysia campus. The school’s library holds 3.5 million volumes in total. There are 20 different schools at Xiamen, which is further broken down into 44 departments. The different schools include the Xiamen Academy of International Law, Software School, and the Internet Education College.
The university is heavily involved with research and even runs multiple research institutes. They have a high endowment and the pride of Xiamen is the ‘Tan Kah Kee’. The ‘Tan’ is their brand new 3,000 ton research vessel that goes towards their ocean research programs.
The school’s tough and intense programs have consistently led to alumni finding success in the world, in many different fields. Alumni include renowned economist Gregory Chow, inventor Lin Yutang, and Li Wo-shi (magistrate of Kinmen County).
