Formerly known as Portsmouth Polytechnic and with even earlier ties to the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts in 1869, the modern history of Portsmouth University begins in 1992 as the school earned university status. Nowadays, Portsmouth University prides itself on its premiere academic as signified by its Gold University Rating by the Teaching Excellence Framework. Students and Faculty
A total of 1,500 staff teach over 22,000 students at Portsmouth University. The total student body is split between over 18,745 undergraduates and 3,315 graduates. As a research institute, Portsmouth University is recognized internationally particularly in the Health Professions such as Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy, as well as in Physics. The school has five academic faculties which are split into 29 departments, offering over 200 undergraduate degrees, 150 postgraduate degrees, and 65 research degree programs.
The primary University Campus site provides a much more urban and fast paced lifestyle, and is also home to the majority of teaching and residential facilities. The smaller Langstone Campus provides a scenic harbor overlook and accommodates the school’s sporting grounds and some student residence halls, as well. Portsmouth University has also partnered to provide academic guidance and accreditation for the Military Technological College of Oman.
Portsmouth University recently reported receiving nearly £22m from funding council grants and an additional £6.5m from research grants. A slightly older estimate placed the endowment size at £1.79m. An independent economic assessment reported that the University brings in almost £0.48b to the City of Portsmouth. A part of this huge endowment goes toward providing Portsmouth University scholarships for international students.
With such an array of academic offerings and a commitment to exceptional teaching and research, it is no surprise to see Portsmouth graduates achieve success in different fields. British broadcaster Ben Fogle is one of the most recognizable voices of all Portsmouth University alumni, along with astronaut and former International Space Station crew member Tim Peake. The school even boasts high ranking politicians such as former Welsh Secretary of State Ron Davies.
Portsmouth University Scholarships (Master’s)
Graduate international students studying at Portsmouth University are eligible to receive fully funded Portsmouth University scholarships. There are many scholarships available including the Santander scholarships and Chevening scholarships. Santander scholarships award Master’s students 5,000 euros for tuition deduction.
