Located in Falmer, Sussex, the University of Sussex is a public research university. It was founded in 1961 with a Royal Charter. Additionally, they were part of the initial 1994 Group of universities that can be described as “research-intensive”. In 2018, Times Higher Education placed the school at 147th on their World University Rankings, and as high as 228th on QS’ World University Rankings. Interested international students have the opportunity to receive generous University of Sussex scholarships.
Roughly 17,000 students attend the University of Sussex. This includes about 12,000 undergraduate students, with the remainder being graduates. They are taught by roughly 5,000 academic staff, which equates to about a 4:1 student to faculty ratio. Over 20 different departments of study are available at Sussex, including Engineering & Informatics, Psychology, and Cognitive & Computing Sciences.
The departments are all part of one main school, which is referred to as the School of Studies. The school is all taught at the one main campus, which is located near the city of Brighton. It is about an hour away from London, and the campus features beautiful architecture for their very own markets, a bank, cafes, a pharmacy, and more.
The University of Sussex has about a £11 million endowments, a substantial amount for to keep facilities updated and clean. Know as a top research school, Sussex dedicates about £35.6 million annually towards research ventures, projects, and University of Sussex scholarships. There are over 40 research centers located on campus, and an additional 15 strategic research centers. IDS (Institute of Development Studies), a development research institute, is located and run on Sussex’ campus. It is ranked 2nd internationally for International Development Think Tanks by the University of Pennsylvania.
Intense programs of study have led to students finding immediate success upon leaving the school. Students have gone on to achieve many great things in all sorts of fields. Alumni include Keith Skeoch (CEO of Standard Life), Festus Mogae (President of Botswana), and Hilary Benn (UK Shadow Foreign Secretary).
