Carleton University was founded in 1942 as a school for WWII veterans. The school was Ontario’s first private, non-denominational college. It’s located in Ottawa, Ontario, CA, on a 153-acre campus. Almost 30,000 students attend Carleton. 25,000 students are undergraduates and 4,000 are graduate students. There are approximately 900 faculty members. The international student body population had been rising steadily, up as much as 50% in the last 3 years. Many of these students receive Carleton University scholarships to help them study.
Carleton houses the MacOdrum Library. The archives there contain 3 million+ items, rare volumes, photographs and university items such as yearbooks. There are two resource centers on campus, as well: the Audio-Visual Resource Center and the European and Russian Studies center. Undergraduates at Carleton automatically become members of the Carleton University Students Association, which runs the 300+ clubs and societies on campus. The University has its own newspaper, the Charlatan, and it’s own radio station, CKCU-FM. Despite these, the University has no theater department, so CUSA runs its own theater company, the Sock N Buskin. I’m an addition to this, CUSA runs the on-campus coffeehouse, pub, and convenience store. The school has 13 fraternities and sororities. There are basketball and hockey teams, however, there is no longer a football team. It was cut in 1999 due to the expense and unsuccessfulness of the team, however many of the current students are campaigning to bring it back.
The Carleton University Endowment fund has over $550 million USD in assets. Most of the money is used to improve and upgrade the campus, fund research projects, award Carleton University scholarships, and keep its programs up and running.
Many graduates of Carleton have been majorly successful and prolific. Among the ranks are lawyers, artists, authors, and politicians, including Canada’s 14th Prime Minister. Three alumni have been Nobel Prize Laureates. The University provides innumerable opportunities for graduates to succeed, and the programs offered to prepare students for their careers outside of academia.
