1. Bilateral Education Agreement Overseas Scholarship

Award

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education has partnered with several countries such as Japan, Italy, and Hungary to offer scholarships for international study. For example, the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria is specifically looking for Nigerian students to apply for MEXT scholarships for the 2019 academic year.

Requirements

  • Scholarships are available for both undergraduates and postgraduate research students and additionally for college of technology and specialized training colleges
  • Most importantly, an official embassy recommendation is required
  • Age requirements will also vary depending on the specific award

2. Lagos State Scholarship Award for Nigerians

Award

The Lagos State Scholarship Board offers a university award to indigenes of Lagos state in Nigeria. This bursary award is granted via a competitive selection process, in which applicants are conducted by a panel of five local leaders. It is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Local scholarships for Nigerian students are available at different levels, amounts ranging from 50k for primary school to 200k for doctorate school.

Requirements

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 for undergrad and 2.1 for postgraduates

Application Process

  • A foreign scholarship for international study suspended in 2009, but there are plans to reintroduce the program in the near future

3. Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme

Award

Young African female students studying in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields are encouraged to apply for the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship. This Nigerian scholarship grants tuition fees, a 500 USD monthly living allowance, a 500 USD book allowance, and even partial reimbursement for travel and computer expenses.

Requirements

  • Female citizen of African Union member state
  • Under age 35 for Master’s study and under age 40 for PhD study
  • Hold a Bachelor degree at minimum and seeking a STEM postgraduate degree
  • Commit to 3 years of working in African Union member state upon completion of study

Application Process

  • Download and complete the online application including the following materials:
  • Recent passport photograph and copy of passport or National Identity Card to prove Nigerian citizenship
  • Copy of admission letter from an African university
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) summarizing relevant academic and professional experience
  • Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts from previous academic institutions
  • Two reference letters and associated contact information
  • 500 word essay relating to chosen field of study and the topic of African development

4. Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF)

Award

One great international scholarship opportunity for Nigerian students is the Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for Universities in the United Kingdom. This award is offered by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) for students to study fields related to oil and gas in the UK.

Requirements

Master’s

  • For those pursuing a first degree, the minimum requirement must be either a honors qualification of Second Class Upper or in select cases a Second Class Lower in addition to relevant industry experience may be sufficient
  • Nigerian applicants must have completed the one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
  • Computer literacy and basic proficiency is required
  • Basic education up to level 5O must be completed, including English language coursework

PhD

  • PhD applicants must have also completed the one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
  • Computer literacy and basic proficiency is required
  • Applicants must have completed a Second Class Lower distinction for their first degree, although no requirements are stated for the second degree certificate.
  • Unlike the Master’s application process, the PhD program requires a five page research proposal to be submitted on the topic of the oil and gas industry
  • The research proposal must include the five following sections: Topic, Intro, Objective, Methodology and Data Collection Process
  • Including or attaching a copy of the Master’s degree project is also required

Application Process

Applicants should complete the online application and submit scanned copies of the following documents:

  • First degree certificate and/or official Statement of Result
  • Local government letter of identification
  • Certificate of discharge from the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC)
  • Examination results from either WAEC, GCE, SSCE, or NECO including the identification number should be clearly stated on the application forms
  • Recent passport photograph
  • Master’s degree certificate must be included – For  PhD Applicants only
  • Professional or industrial associations should include proof of official membership

5. Chevron Scholarships for Nigerian Students

Award

Chevron offers countless students the opportunity to pursue advanced study in Nigeria with such awards as the NNPC and the Chevron Abgami scholarship. For example, the Abgami award was offered to Nigerian students studying in the medical or engineering professions and was open to Medicine & Surgery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Engineering.

Requirements (NNPC)

  • Recent Passport photograph (450px by 450px) with white background – must not be more than 3 months old
  • Proof of area of origin from local government
  • Official birth certificate
  • O level certificate and School ID Card
  • Admission letter from accepted university for desired study

6. Shell Nigeria (Shell Petroleum Development Company) Scholarships

Award

Similar to Chevron, Shell Nigeria is a large oil company that sponsors several scholarships for study across Nigeria. These university scholarship schemes are broken down between National Merit Awards (NM) and Areas of Merit Awards (AoM) for specific disciplines. More than 16,000 applicants apply for these highly competitive awards each year.

Additionally, Shell Nigeria also offers awards such as the Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship, which grants ten awards for postgraduate study at three premiere United Kingdom institutions. Graduate students who are selected may choose from the Imperial College of London, the University College of London, and the University of Leeds.

Requirements

  • Both National Merit and Areas of Merit categories are only available to first year students
  • These two awards are granted only for study at Nigerian universities, while the Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship is only eligible to students who have no previous history of study in the UK
  • Applicants must be local to a community or area  in which Shell Nigeria operates

Application Process

  • The University Program is administered by a joint venture coalition of the NNPC, Shell, Elf, and Agip organizations
  • Selection considers examination results from the national SSCE and JAMB tests
  • Applicants must take an additional aptitude test at one of the following locations:
    • PortHarcourt, Warri, Enugu, Lagos and Abuja centers.
