The University of Essex is a public research university based in Colchester, Essex in England. Established in 1963, the university is divided into 3 main campuses: The Colchester Campus, the Southend-on-Sea Campus, and the Loughton Campus. The main Colchester campus lies within Wivenhoe Park, a large and sprawling natural park home to a diverse range of wildlife. The university has a high reputation for academic excellence, frequently being ranked as a top university, both nationally and internationally.

The university is academically divided into three faculties: The Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science & Health, and the Faculty of Social Sciences. 20 different schools and departments are grouped under these 3 faculties and they offer over 100 different undergraduate courses, postgraduate Masters, research degrees, certificates, and diplomas.

The University also forms a number of prestigious partnerships with other elite educational institutions across the globe. International partnerships have included the Kaplan Singapore programme as well as joint degrees with numerous universities in Asia and Europe. With a total student population of over 14,000, Essex has a large population of international students numbering around 5000 in total and hailing from over 130 countries in the world. It has been placed by Times Higher Education for having one of the highest percentages of international students from outside the UK and has been considered a hub of diversity and multicultural interactions.

Students have access to a diverse range of facilities. Its Student Union has been consistently awarded for diligent and admirable work for the Essex student community. The union helps to run a wide range of commercial services for the university populace as well, including shops with imported products, SU bars, restaurants, and club-style venues.

Sport is considered a good strength of Essex with the university offering around 40 different types of sports clubs for students. The university invests significantly in this area and the teams have gone on towards achieving high records of national successes.

Essex further established the Knowledge Gateway Research & Technology Park in the main Colchester campus and provides employment opportunities for around 2000 people. It further provides strong links for students in terms of graduate employment and developing expertise in the fields of Science, Business, and Technology.

Although Essex is not a part of the prestigious Russel Group of Universities that have a research-intensive focus, the university has strong foundations and commitments towards research. The Research Excellence Framework has placed Essex in a high rank, particularly for research in the fields of politics. Nine additional subjects including sociology, economics, PPE, history, and sports sciences were also ranked highly for ‘intensity’ (which maps university performance against staff abundance).

In addition to this, Essex has been consistently ranked as a top university for education and academics. The Sunday Times University Guide 2018 ranked the university in the 22nd place in terms of the national rankings. Internationally, THE and QS rankings place Essex as one of the top 300-350 universities in the world.

Essex has produced several notable alumni and academics, including two Nobel laureates. Among the recent famous alumni, filmmaker David Yates, architect of the new World Trade Centre Daniel Libeskind, and author Ben Okri were former students of the university. Others include Oscar Aris (former president of Costa Rica), artist Tom Raworth, novelist Tom Okri and several more.
