Do you want to know about the acceptance rate at the University of Queensland? If so, you have come to the right place. However, before we get into specifics, let’s talk about the background information.

The University of Queensland (UQ) was established in 1909. It is a public research university based in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia. It is one of the oldest universities in Australia and is considered to be a sandstone university (a group of Australian higher educational institutions established during the colonial period). The university is among the leaders in teaching and research in Australia. It has consistently been ranked highly for its academic excellence in the national and international league tables.

The university is spread with several campuses, with the main campus being the St. Lucia campus. Other UQ campuses include the Gatton campus and the Mayne Medical School. Collectively, the university has 6 main faculties that support academic and research activities which offer a wide variety of degrees, diplomas, and certificates. UQ has a semester-based module system for its courses with a combination of tutorials (based on the British system) and course credits (based on the American system).

Catering to a student population of over 50,0000, UQ has around 34,000 undergraduates and 16,000 postgraduates studying at present. It has a diverse and multinational community with students and staff hailing from around 150+ countries across the world.

The university also offers a variety of facilities to support the students. The student union is the chief student representation body that governs a range of services including managing over 190 clubs and societies. A diverse collection of sports facilities is offered in the university premises which are open to students, staff as well as the general community.

Queensland is known for its research-intensive focus, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and medicine. Its academics have been consistently placed in high ranks for their research intensity. The commitment to research is further strengthened with their partnerships with over 400 other research institutions and global partnerships. UQ further incorporates multiple research partners in Australia as well, including centers for Boeing, the Dow Centre, and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Among the notable contributions to research is the development of the HPV vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer. You may think that the University of Queensland has a low acceptance rate, but this is not the case. You will see that later.

Due to its high standards of teaching and research excellence, Queensland has been constantly ranked at a high position in the league tables. For the year 2018, it was ranked 55th in the world by the ARWU rankings, 48th by the QS rankings, and 69th by the Times Higher Education Rankings of 2019. The Business School’s MBA degree holds the highest rank in the Asia Pacific region and one of the top 10 global MBA programmes. The engineering degrees have been highly ranked as well.

The University of Queensland has produced countless graduates who are at the peak of their positions in the world. With an alumni network of over 264,000 spanning across 170+ countries and the high academic reputation of the university, numerous distinguished alumni have graduated from this university. Notable examples include Principal of King’s College London Edward Byrne, former Singaporean Minister Lee Boon Yang, Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine Peter C. Doherty, actor Geoffrey Rush, former Chief Justices of Australia, and several famous political figures and diplomats.

University of Queensland Acceptance Rate

So, you have read about the basics of the University of Queensland, and you should have realized that this is a great university. High rankings and excellent research back this fact up. However, the acceptance rate at the University of Queensland is estimated to be 40%. This is quite high for an excellent university like Queensland. Why such a high acceptance rate? Australian universities all have these characteristics, but they do accept a lot of students, especially international, but not all of them graduate. They make the admission easy but make the studies hard. So, if you have the motivation to work hard and endure, you will be fine. If not, you should not apply to the University of Queensland.

If you are interested, I recommend applying for admission and even apply for scholarships. You can see scholarship information on the University of Queensland Scholarships Page.
