Located in Beaumont, Texas, Lamar University is a public institution established in 1923. It started out as the South Park Junior College which was renamed Lamar College in 1923, in honor of Mirabeau Lamar who served as the second president of the Republic of Texas. It changed its name to Lamar State College of Technology shortly after World War II as enrollment increased due to war veterans opting to enroll in the college. It is known as one of the most diverse universities according to the US News and World Report as a large population of Hispanic, Asian, Black, and other International students attend the university.
The Lamar Cardinals and Lady Cardinals and their 17 sports teams represent the university in the NCAA Division I FCS. The Cardinals share a strong rivalry with the McNeese State Cowboys dubbed as the “Battle of the Border.”
Some of its notable graduates include singer-songwriter Janis Joplin, politician Nick Lampson, former Lyondell CEO Dan Smith, and Garrett Metal Detectors CEO Charles Garrett.
Lamar University is ranked #3 in the United States for its online graduate programs. It is one of the 29 public universities recognized as a doctoral research university by the Carnegie Foundation as well. The university ranks #230-301 in National Universities and #350 in Business Programs according to US News and World Report and ranks #258 of 1,402 in Best College Athletics in America according to Niche.
