Because of Oxford and Cambridge, university education in the UK is regarded as one of the best in the world, although the New World has some higher schools to match – Stanford, Harvard, and Yale to name a few. As the UK has not exited the EU just yet, all students coming from one of the bloc’s member-states pay the same tuition fees as their British peers.

If you have ever wondered what tuition fees the universities of Oxford and Cambridge charge to international and domestic undergraduate students, read on to find out! Of course, we shall also have a look at the undergraduate tuition fees of some more mainstream universities in the UK that also provide undergraduate programs of the highest quality.

Tuition Fees in the United Kingdom

1. Oxford University

To begin with, Oxford University has been the best higher education provider in the world since 2017. The exact foundation date of this school is shrouded in mystery. Yet, it is known for a fact that the town of Oxford was an educational center in England as far back as in the year 1096.

Every year, about 12,000 students from many different countries around the world are admitted to study at this most prestigious of all universities in the world. 43% of all new enrollments are of students from outside the EU. In 2018, only one in six undergraduate applicants was admitted.

2. University of Cambridge

The rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge, UK’s two most prestigious universities, dates many centuries back. For example, the boat clubs of the two schools compete every year since 1829. And for many centuries it was believed that Oxford used to be better for its programs in the field of humanities, whereas Cambridge excelled in the field of sciences.

From the above quotes, we can see that the University of Cambridge is a bit cheaper for non-EU students. Interestingly, this school appears to be the best place in the world to study Anatomy and Physiology. We were also surprised to find out that for all of its great reputation, the University of Cambridge accepted about 20% of all applicants in the latest admission cycle.

3. The University of Edinburgh

  • Tuition fees for Non-EU citizens: GBP 26,000 a year
  • Tuition fees for Scottish nationals: GBP 1,800 a year
  • Tuition fees for other UK citizens: GBP 9,250

The University of Edinburgh welcomes more than 40,000 freshmen every year. Of those, more than 22,500 enroll in some of its numerous undergraduate programs. These are offered by the university’s three colleges: The College of Human and Veterinary Medicine, The College of Engineering and Sciences, and The College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

This is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world with foundations dating back to 1583. Some of its most notable alumni are the father of the Evolutionary Theory, Charles Darwin, and the man who invented the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell. Compared to Oxford and Cambridge, this university is a bit more selective with an average acceptance rate of just over ten percent.

4. Cardiff University

Cardiff University began its road to academic excellence at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire in 1883. Back then, it had only about 100 full-time students and about half as much part-time students.

Now, it has over 23,500 undergraduate enrollments a year and over seven thousand of these are international students. This school is one of the best places in the UK to pursue a degree in Architecture, Media & Communications, and Psychology. The medical school of this university is also very popular in Europe, but the fees that it charges international students exceed GBP 30,000.

5. Queen’s University Belfast

  • Tuition fees for Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland and EU nationals: GBP 4,300
  • Tuition fees for the UK and Non-EU students: GBP 9,250

This is the 173rd best university in the world, while Northern Ireland has the lowest student living costs in the UK. The beginnings of this higher education provider can be traced back to 1845. Back then, it consisted of three Queen’s Colleges – in Belfast, Cork, and Galway.

The academic life is organized in three main hubs – the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Physics, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. This is one of the few universities in Europe which offer comprehensive undergraduate programs in Cyber Security. Popular majors also include Electronics and Computer Engineering.

6. University of Leeds

The University of Leeds was founded in 1904 in the North of England to help the region’s industrialization and development. Now, it sits among the top 100 universities in the world and the academic focus is on research, development, and constant innovations.

This is a big public university with more than 30,000 students and more than 5,000 of them come from overseas. The most popular majors are Engineering, Science & Technology, and Business.

7. University of Liverpool

Located in Northwest England, Liverpool University was founded back in 1881 as the first of the six “Red Brick Universities” in the country. It now has more than 35,000 students and 8,000 of them are international. An interesting fact about this university is that during the academic year its two major libraries are open for students around the clock.

The fees for international undergraduate students depend largely on the program that they have chosen. Some of the more expensive programs are Medicine and Veterinary Science, while most of the other programs cost about GBP 16,000 a year.
