This controversial reputation of the recent past is now being replaced by a far more amicable image – China is now seen as a culturally-diverse country that offers some excellent higher education opportunities.

IELTS Band Requirements for Chinese Universities

1. Fudan University

This prestigious university in downtown Shanghai was founded in 1905 by the renowned professor Ma Xiangbo. Today, it is one of the most popular and at the same time most selective higher education providers in China. Fudan University now has over 30,000 full-time students.

The international community at Fudan totals just over 1,700 students, but this number is set to grow in the coming years. The university has got more than sixty different departments, organized into seventeen schools.

They offer more than 70 undergraduate programs and about two hundred Master’s programs. With more than ten university hospitals in greater Shanghai, Fudan is one of the best places to study medicine in China. If you go there to study, do visit the magnificent Guanghua Twin Towers at the center of the Handan campus. They soar over 140 meters in height. As you can see, this university in China requires that you have at least 6.5 or 7.0 IELTS Band depending on your program.

 2. Sichuan International Studies University

Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) is a full-time undergraduate university in Shapingba District, Chongqing – China’s fourth-largest city. Its main academic focus is on foreign languages – English, French, Spanish, etc. SISU is therefore regarded as the alma mater of China’s top diplomats.

If you go to study there, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with the children of China’s state and political elite. This is one of the best places in the country to major in foreign languages, foreign trade, diplomacy, and international relations.

The university does not offer any Master’s programs, which is a bit strange. The beginnings of SISU can be traced to 1950s when it was opened as training center for foreign languages of the Russian military corps in China.

3. University of International Business and Economics

Next on the list of universities in China that require IELTS band is the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE). It was established in 1951 with its main academic focus being in the fields of Law, Literature, and Economics. Now, UIBE has fifteen different schools, including a Graduate School.

Some of UIBE’s most popular departments are the Department of Physical Education and the Department of Culture and Art. We were surprised to find out that the university currently offers more than 1,400 different undergraduate courses, and more than 870 postgraduate courses.

Many of these courses are taught in the English language as part of the university’s international students’ portfolio. This unprecedented academic diversity is well complemented by the one hundred doctoral courses that the university also provides.

4. East China University of Science and Technology

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) is located in the ever-growing city of Shanghai – China’s trade, economic and financial heart. Since its establishment in 1956, ECUST has become China’s most internationally-friendly university.

An interesting fact about East China University of Science and Technology is that it became the first university in the country to offer a Bachelor’s program in Chemical Engineering. To this day, ECUST is among China’s top 13 universities for Engineering. There are many Master’s and Bachelor’s programs in Engineering taught in English, and the minimum IELTS requirements are quite achievable.  

5. China Agricultural University

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 7.0
  • IELTS Band for graduate students: 7.0

China is the most populous country in the world. As such, it constantly needs to develop innovative crop-growing strategies and farming technologies so as to feed its ever-growing population. One of the schools that are responsible for keeping famine at bay is the world-famous China Agricultural University.

The university was established back in 1905 and currently has more than 12,500 undergraduate and over 4,500 graduate students. In terms of IELTS Band requirements, this university in China appears to be one of the most selective in the country.  

6. Peking University

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 7.0
  • IELTS Band for graduate students: 7.0

Located in China’s capital Beijing, Peking University is China’s second-best university. The latest research shows that this is also the 30th best university in the world this year. Peking University has one of the largest communities of international students in China.

Founded in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking, this is the oldest higher education provider in the country. The university’s College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering offers a wide variety of Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in English. However, the candidates are required to present the highest possible IELTS score of 7 out of 7.

7. Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.0
  • IELTS Band for graduate students: 6.5

The Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) was established in 1955. Now, the university has developed into fourteen different schools. This university in China requires international students to have certain IELTS Band to attend their program. The most popular of these are the School of Information and Communication Engineering and School of Software Engineering. BUPT currently has more than 20,000 full-time students. they can choose from more than 30 undergraduate programs and nine graduate programs. Some of these programs are taught in English.
