Offered by the Educational Department of Taiwan, the Taiwan Government Scholarships are open to all international students except for students from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. To strengthen the relationship between Taiwan and its diplomatic allies, the Government of Taiwan has established this scholarship scheme to attract students from all over the world. Compared to other government scholarships, this scholarship scheme is not a full-ride scholarship, so you might need to pay if the educational costs exceed the scholarship stipend. However, if you do not want to pay a dime, please consider New Zealand Government Scholarship since it covers all aspects of studying abroad.

Eligibility Requirements / Benefits of Taiwan Government Scholarships

Before we go over the scholarship values, we are first going to look at the eligibility requirements of Taiwan Government Scholarships. The unwritten rule for every applicant is that you need to be an international student. According to the Taiwanese Government, an international student is an applicant whose country of origin is not Taiwan. If you are not from Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau, then you are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

  • Be a High School Graduate With an Excellent Academic Record
  • Be a High School Graduate Without Any Criminal Record
  • Cannot Be a National of Republic of China (Taiwan)
  • Cannot Be an Overseas Compatriot Student
  • Cannot Be an Exchange Student
  • Does Not Have Any Previous Record of Attending the Particular Taiwanese Institution*
  • Does Not Have Any Previous Record of Having a Scholarship Revoked

*If you have previously attended an institution in Taiwan, you can’t apply for the same level of education that you have received in the past. For students who didn’t have any previous record of attending Taiwanese institutions, this eligibility requirement does not apply to you at all.

Scholarship Values of Taiwan Government Scholarship*

  • Monthly Stipend of NT $25,000 (Only for Students Taking LEP Programs)
  • Monthly Stipend of NT $30,000 (Only for Students Taking Degree Programs)
  • Coverage of Travelling Fees

*LEP = Mandarin Language Enrichment Program; NT $25,000 = USD $800; NT $30,000 = USD $1,000

By looking at the benefits above, you can see that you are only given a monthly stipend to cover all your expenses. If your expenses cost more than the scholarship money, then the rest comes out of your own pocket! This can become a problem for international students since you can’t quit during the middle of a scholarship scheme. If you want to go back home for free, you need to wait until the scholarship period is over. If you are interested in this scholarship, make sure that you can spend a month in Taiwan just by using the stipend given by the Taiwan Government.

In addition, the monthly stipend is definitely not enough to cover all your expenses during your stay in Taiwan. If you are not willing to spend a lot of money in Taiwan, I would suggest that you apply for other government scholarships. For now, let’s just keep on looking at Taiwan Government Scholarships to see how it all ends out.
