Hanyang University is a South Korean institution of higher education. Founded in 1939 as the Dong-A Engineering Institute by Dr. Kim Lyun-joon, it is named after Seoul’s name (Hanyang) during the Joseon dynasty.

The university, which has a main campus in Seoul and a satellite branch in Ansan, is the first school to offer engineering and architecture degrees in South Korea. It consistently ranks as a top university in the country – even the world – especially in the STEM fields.

International Students

Given its international reputation, Hanyang University continues to attract students from all over the globe. 21% of its 20,000+ students are foreigners, with some of them studying under the university’s scholarship programs.

These students are overseen by the university’s Office of International Affairs, which manages full-time admissions as well as short-term exchange programs. Other foreign student services offered by the office include Korean language tutoring, counseling, and career development.

Tuition Fee at Hanyang University for International Students

The tuition fee for foreign students at Hanyang University varies according to program.

For undergraduate students, the cheapest degree is Humanities/Social Science, which costs about $3,700. Natural Science and Physical Education programs cost about $4,300 while Engineering and Fine Arts degrees cost about $4,800 per semester. The most expensive course is Intelligence Computing, which costs $5,600 a semester.

Graduate studies are more expensive, with the cheapest being a Masters/Doctorate in Humanities or Social Science ($5,000 per semester). The most expensive is a Master’s in Business Administration, which costs about $9,400 a semester.

Application Fee at Hanyang University

The application fee for foreigners is about $120 for a single application. As for a dual application, a fee of about $150 will apply.

The application fee may be paid through bank transfer or credit card. It may also be paid via PayPal or Alipay, though these methods will incur an additional fee.

Admissions Requirements for International Students

Undergraduate students need to submit the following requirements to the Office of International Affairs:

  • Accomplished application form
  • Official high school graduation certificate
  • Transcript of records
  • Copy of personal statement and study plan
  • Copy of passport ID (applicant and his/her parents)
  • Certificate authenticating bank balance (must be $20,000 or higher)
  • Certificate of TOPIK score (except for English Track program applicants)
  • Certificate of English proficiency test (IELTS or TOEFL)
  • Achievements or Artworks (for Art majors)
  • Proof of denationalization for former Korean citizens

As for graduate students, the same requirements apply. However, a Bachelor’s-level certificate and transcripts are needed instead of high school-level ones. A certification of the GPA, which should be converted to a 100 scale/percentage, is needed as well.

Hanyang University Rankings

Hanyang University is ranked in many listings. As for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is listed in the 351-400 bracket, thus making it the top 11 university in all of Korea. It is ranked 38th in the Asian University Rankings and 91st in Impact Rankings.

The QS Top Universities rankings, on the other hand, put Hanyang at a higher number (146). In this survey, Hanyang is placed 7th in all of South Korea.

Hanyang University Acceptance Rate

Estimates show that Hanyang University has a low acceptance of rate for local students at just 3.8%. The estimated acceptance rate, however, is higher for international applicants at 25%. Admission to Hanyang is usually based on the student’s academic record and entrance exam results.

Undergraduate Scholarships

1. Hanyang International Scholarship Program (HISP)

HISP is given to international applicants who showcase excellent academic records and art portfolios (art majors). This Hanyang University scholarship for international students is available for a total of 8 semesters for freshmen students and 4 semesters for transferees. To maintain this scholarship, the student should have a minimum GPA of 2.0 per semester.

There are no set numbers of HISP recipients per semester as the number of awardees varies per intake.

2. Hanyang International Excellence Awards (HIEA)

  • Scholarship Amount: 30% to 100% reduction in the tuition fee amount

Given to foreigners who demonstrate excellent academic showing in Hanyang, the HIEA scholarship covers one semester. It is given to students who have a valid TOPIK certificate and a minimum GPA score of 3.0 last semester. The amount of this Hanyang University scholarship (30% to 100%) depends on the assessor’s evaluation of the student’s academic credentials.

The TOPIK Scholarship, however, is available to students who are currently enrolled in Hanyang.

Graduate Scholarships

1. Hanyang International Scholarship Program (HISP)

Similar to the HISP for undergraduates, this Hanyang University scholarship for graduate international students is given to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their previous institution. The main qualification is the GPA, which, when converted, should be a minimum of 80 out of 100. As such, it is important to forward this certificate upon admission to be considered for this scholarship.

The HISP is given a maximum of 4 semesters for Master’s students and 8 semesters for Ph.D. students. To keep this scholarship, the student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 every semester.

Likewise, the number of HISP recipients varies every semester. There is also no need to apply as this is automatically awarded after admission.

2. IUCF-HYU Scholarship for Master’s and Doctoral students in Engineering and Science

  • Scholarship Amount: 50% reduction in admission fees and 100% reduction in tuition fees

This scholarship is granted to foreign students who receive the Hanyang Scholarship for Science & Engineering. Given after admission – particularly during the first semester – this is provided for a total of 6 semesters.

Compared to other scholarship programs, the requirement for this Hanyang University scholarship for international students is particularly stringent. The student must require a GPA of 3.75 per semester – as well as publish 2-3 studies depending on his/her major. Failure to meet these requirements will lead to the revocation of the scholarship. The student will also need to repay the entire amount that was covered.

Compared to undergraduate students, there are more scholarship programs available for graduate students. They include the:

  • Hanyang Scholarship for Excellence in Language Proficiency for 1 semester
  • Hanyang Scholarship for Engineering and Science Students for 4 semesters
  • GSIS (Seoul), Industrial Convergence (ERICA) scholarship for international students, which is given to select Graduate School of International Studies students for a total of 4 semesters
  • Hanyang Alumni Scholarship, which is granted to deserving Hanyang undergraduate alumni for a total of 4 semesters
  • Hanyang International Excellence Awards (HIEA) and TOPIK Scholarship, which are given to registered students during the semester
