The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a public research university founded in 1963. CUHK is based in Shatin, China, and is the second-oldest institution for higher learning in the region. The university started as a federation of three colleges before going on to become an independent institution. Since then, it has grown to become the best institution in the world.

The institution also excels in various research fields, thanks to its research institutes and centers, not to mention the four key laboratories. Undergraduate students undergo research training at CUHK graduate school which was founded in 1966. It has since developed and currently offers over 250 graduate programs and master’s diplomas. In this article, we will be looking at the Chinese University of Hong Kong scholarships for international students.

International Students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong

Currently, the university hosts over 21,000 students – 17,000 of which are enrolled in undergraduate programs while the rest are postgraduates. About 33% of the student body is made up of international students hailing from over 150 countries across the world.

As an international student, you can apply for on-campus or off-campus accommodation depending on availability. There are about 430 houses designed for international students. Each of these has an internet connection with hundreds of GBps in bandwidth. There are also museums and cultural facilities where you will learn about the school’s history and the Chinese culture.

Tuition Fee for International Students

The tuition fee for non-local undergraduate students currently costs approximately $186,700, depending on the course you choose. You may also need to pay a hostel fee of $1600, especially if you are planning to live on-campus. According to the university’s approximation, you will need to plan your self with about $24,500 to cater for both your tuition and living expenses per year. International Admissions Guide

If you are planning to join the Chinese University of Hong Kong, it would be prudent to first go through the official admissions guide to prepare yourself accordingly. Normally, the regular application deadline is mid-January but can be extended to May. However, if you send your application earlier enough – preferably before the end of November – you might be eligible for an advance offer.

That said, the first step will be to confirm the availability of your preferred course, especially if you are sending your application during the extended period. Once that is confirmed, gather all the necessary documents, fill an online application form and submit it when done. You can now wait for a response from the relevant department.

Application Fee

Every applicant is expected to pay a facilitation fee of about $60 during the application fee. This is refundable once you decide to leave the university but is usually utilized as your graduation fee.

Admission Requirements

To study at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, you will first need a student visa or entry permit to further your studies in Hong Kong. By the beginning of the next academic year (1st September), you must possess a high school certificate from a recognized school in your native country. It is worth noting that the grades here will only be considered if they are from an exam done within the past year.

In the case of a graduate program, you must have completed an undergraduate study at a recognized institution. In other words, you will need to possess a bachelor’s degree, an associate degree, a higher diploma, or an equivalent of the three. All international applicants, especially those from schools where English is not the primary instructional language, must demonstrate their English proficiency. There are various accepted tests in that regard, and they include IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and ACT combined English. Make sure to confirm these tests on the school’s official website.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has constantly appeared in the top universities in the region. For instance, QS (10) and THE (8) both consider CUHK as one of the top 10 institutions in Asia. In the most recent world rankings table, CUHK was ranked 43rd and 57th worldwide by QS and THE, respectively. These rankings are usually based on academic performance and research output, where the university excels. CUHK has one of the youngest medical schools in the world, but it was recently ranked among the top 50 across the globe.

The school will then assess all candidates and pick the top-performing applicants, who will then receive awards ranging from $650 to full tuition fee payment. Some may also receive an allowance of $5,800 annually.

This scholarship aims to support non-local students studying in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is one of the selected universities to offer this financial aid in Hong Kong to citizens of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Those who get this Chinese University of Hong Kong scholarships will have all their tuition and accommodation fee covered. After studies, these students will be attached to OCBC for a given period.

1. CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship Scheme

Given the current economic situation across the world, many prospective students may not have the ability to finance their studies abroad. The CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship scheme is designed to help such students realize their dreams at CUHK. One of the qualifications is a GPA of at least 3.5 in your previous studies and should be from a recognized university to get this Chinese University of Hong Kong scholarships. You will be awarded $10,300 in total but split into three; $5,150 will be disbursed in the first year, and the balance will be distributed across the following two academic years.
