Founded in 1984 as the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, the City Univerisity of Hong Kong became a fully credited university ten years later and is now one of the most important higher education institutions in the area. It consists of nine main faculties offering courses on a variety of different subjects.

International Students

According to unofficial information, international students make up around half of the student population at the City University of Hong Kong. Considering how attractive Hong Kong is for international students because of the culture and uniqueness of the environment, this should be of no surprise.

International students enjoy all of the different amenities that the school has to offer, including counseling, university clubs, state-of-the-art facilities, and much more. International students even enjoy some privileges over locals during the selection process.

Tuition Fee for International Students

The City University of Hong Kong has a fixed yearly tuition fee of $18,000. This fee applies to all courses. Applicants also need to take into account the other expenses that come with living in Hong Kong. The university offers accommodation on-campus which costs an additional $2,000 per year. Other living costs such as meals, transportation, book expenses, etc. costs around $4,600 per year.

International Admissions Guide

To begin the admission process, you will need to create an account with the CityU online application system. To do so, simply enter your email and password, and you will be sent an application ID that you can use to log in to your application account. Once there, you can start completing the application and uploading all of the necessary documentation. You can make changes to your application only before the selection process has begun.

After you submit the online application, you will need to pay the $38 application fee. All major credit cards are accepted. The application cannot be processed without this payment. After everything is completed, you should see an application acknowledgment on your account. Once the selection process is completed, you will be notified. This process is the same for both undergraduate and graduate applicants.

Application Fee

The application fee at this university is $38. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable, which means that you will have to pay an additional $38 fee every time you wish to apply (to different courses at the university).

Admissions Requirements at City University of Hong Kong for International Students

The two main requirements that are taken into account by the university for undergraduate applicants are their academic results in high school and their level of knowledge in English. That being said, meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Additionally, certain study programs may also have additional requirements.

The same two requirements also apply to postgraduate applicants, with the only difference being the requirement of having a bachelor’s degree, along with related documentation and certification. It is also worth noting that non-Chinese speaking applicants will have to show an ability to speak Chinese to at least some level regardless of the language that they will be studying in.

Rankings

The City University of Hong Kong is one of the top-performing universities in Hong Kong, but due to its novelty, it fails to rank higher than some of the more established ones. Regardless of that, the university currently occupies the respectable 126th place in the QS World Rankings. In 2020, the City University of Hong Kong was also considered the 7th best young university. Continentally, the university ranks as the 14th best in Asia.

Acceptance Rate

The estimated acceptance rated at the City University of Hong Kong is between 30% to 40%. The selection outcome mainly depends on the students’ past academic results, or in some cases their extracurricular activities.

Undergraduate Scholarships

1. Entrance Scholarships

The City University of Hong Kong offers a variety of scholarships to international applicants enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program. The student will automatically be considered for one of these scholarships and does not need to go through an application process. Candidates are selected based on their past academic achievements.

There are four types of entrance scholarships at the City University of Hong Kong: Top Scholarship which covers both the student’s tuition costs and living expenses, as well as accommodation, full and half-tuition scholarships, covering either the full or half of the tuition costs, and a diversity grant of $3,900 for underprivileged students.

2. Outstanding Athletes Scholarships

Entering undergraduate students who are applying as student-athletes are eligible to receive a grant of up to $20,500 per year. This scholarship also falls in the category of an entrance scholarship but is reserved only for outstanding athletes who are looking to attend a regular study program. Traditionally meant for local students only, this City University of Hong Kong scholarship was recently made available for all student-athlete applicants of the City University of Hong Kong.

Graduate Scholarships

1. Postgraduate Studentship

All new full-time applicants who are looking to attend a research degree program will automatically be considered for a Postgraduate Studentship. Generally, the students who receive this City University of Hong Kong scholarship finished near the top of their class in either their bachelor’s or master’s degree program.

The studentship can be renewed each year based on the student’s academic and research performances in the year prior. Receiving students are required to attend at least 10 hours of teaching and/or research each week.

2. Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme

With its dedication to high-quality and impactful research, the City University of Hong Kong looks to attract some of the world’s brightest minds to come and work on a research thesis there. Thus, they offer a lucrative fellowship for all Ph.D. students, providing an opportunity for them to gain some hands-on experience in their field.

This City University of Hong Kong scholarship was established by the Research Grants Committee of the Hong Kong government and is available for both domestic and international students.
