Taiwan’s outstanding educational system gives a world-class learning experience, and it opens a lot of opportunities to foreign students. Universities in this country produce excellent graduates in different fields.

Today, Taiwan has 153 universities all around the country. These institutions provide quality learning at a reasonable price, and there are Taiwan scholarships to international students. Since Taiwan strongly values education, they support all of their students, including international students.

Best Scholarships in Taiwan

1. Outstanding International Graduate Student Scholarship at National Taiwan University

  • Scholarship Coverage: Tuition fee waivers, NTD 6,000 monthly stipend of NTD 6,000 (Master’s) and NTD 8,000 (Ph.D.)
  • Eligible Degree: Master’s, Ph.D.

The National Taiwan University (NTU) is located in the capital of the country, Taipei. This university is considered the most comprehensive research institution in the country as they have more than 60 research centers all over Taiwan. Also, NTU has an excellent academic reputation in Asia, and international students get to experience a world-class education.

Scholarships are also offered to incoming international students. NTU provides a lot of financial support to these students, and one of their scholarships, the Outstanding International Graduate Student Scholarship, is given to selected foreign Master’s and Ph.D. students. This Taiwan scholarship is a tuition fee waiver and a monthly allowance designed to support these international students.

The scholarship can cover the whole duration of the program. (two years for the master’s degree and three years for the Ph.D.) There is no separate application for this. You’ll be asked to apply for these scholarships during your admission process.

2. NTHU International Student Scholarship

The National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) is a research university located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. This university offers many programs, including English and Chinese taught programs, which are very suitable for international students.

Today, as NTHU welcomes these international students, they do provide scholarships. The NTHU International Student Scholarship is awarded to international students in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The scholarship is divided into two types: the full and the tuition waiver only. For the full scholarships, monthly allowances are given with the tuition fee waivers.

For incoming international students, you can apply for this scholarship in Taiwan during your admission process. On the other hand, you must meet a specific GPA for current students to be eligible and submit some documents. The duration of the award is for one year.

3. NCKU Distinguished International Student Scholarship

  • Scholarship Coverage: NTD 10,000-15,000 monthly stipend (bachelor’s), depending on the scholarship type. NTD 8,000 or lower and a tuition fee exemption monthly stipend (Master’s)
  • Eligible Degree: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees

Founded in 1931, the National Cheng Kung University is a public university in the country and offers one of the best scholarships in Taiwan for international students. This university has a good reputation in medicine, engineering, computer science, and more. Also, they do have a sound support system for international students adapting to their new environment.

The Distinguished International Student Scholarship aims to recognize these incoming and current foreign students in the university. The scholarship will cover the whole duration of the program for every degree. For the incoming bachelor’s degree, no separate application is required. The university will rank and get the 20 – 40% of the total number of international students accepted by a department. A higher ranking means a higher amount of scholarship. Same with the current students, the top 20 – 40% will receive a scholarship.

International students in the Master’s degree will be automatically considered for this scholarship, and they will be notified through their admission letter if they are recipients of the award.

4. NYCU Elite Ph.D. Scholarship

  • Eligible Degree: Ph.D.

The National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is a public research university in Taipei, Taiwan. They offer scholarships to their international students as they produce world-class research and graduates.

The NYCU Elite Ph.D. scholarship is open to incoming international doctoral students who shows excellent performance both in academic and research. To apply for this Taiwan scholarship, kindly indicate it during your admission process for you to be considered. Every department will nominate its candidates. The scholarship will cover the first two years of your studies. After two years, they will review your performance in the academe and the research.

5. NTUST Scholarships

  • Scholarship Coverage: Tuition and credit fee waivers and a monthly stipend of NTD 9,000 – 12,000 (Master’s) and NTD 12,500 – 18,000 (Ph.D.), depending on the scholarship type.
  • Eligible Degree: Master’s, Ph.D.

Located in Taipei, the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), also known as TaiwanTech, offers many programs for international students. Currently, the population of foreign students in this university is increasing. As they promote quality education to every student, they also offer scholarships to them.

NTUST scholarships assist outstanding internal students in the university. This Taiwan scholarship award is divided into two: the full and the partial. The differences between the scholarships are in the monthly stipend that they will receive. To apply for the scholarship, they should be full-time students, and they must submit an application form along with their transcripts of records, a result of the English language proficiency test, and others.

6. MOFA Taiwan Scholarship

  • Scholarship Coverage: a monthly stipend of 25,000 NT or 30,000 NT depending on the program and a one-way flight ticket to Taiwan
  • Eligible Degree: Bachelor’s, Masters, Ph.D.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides scholarships to excellent international students who wish to study in Taiwan. This fosters diplomatic relations and friendship between Taiwanese and people from other countries. However, students from China, Hong Kong, and Macau are not eligible for this award.

Candidates may apply for any degree program leading to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree as well as the pre-degree Mandarin Language Enrichment Program (LEP). The award duration for LEP applicants is one year while the award period is for a maximum of four years for candidates for degree programs. The duration of study must be continuous and cannot exceed five years in total.

This Taiwan scholarship will give students a monthly stipend of 25,000 NT, and degree program awardees will receive a stipend of 30,000 NT. Additionally, they will receive a round-trip economy ticket to and from Taiwan. However, this scholarship will not cover all of your expenses in Taiwan.

7. Taiwan Ministry of Education Scholarship

  • Scholarship Coverage: up to 40,000 NTD tuition fees, an additional 15,000 NTD (bachelor’s) and 20,000 NTD (postgraduate, Ph.D.)
  • Eligible Degree: Bachelor’s, Masters, Ph.D.

Students from nations not eligible for the MOFA scholarship can apply for scholarships through the Ministry of Education. There are 59 nations that are not diplomatically represented in Taiwan. These nations include the Philippines, Macau, and Hong Kong.

Applicants must have a diploma from their secondary school as well as a strong academic background to be considered. Candidates who wish to enroll in a program that is not entirely taught in English must complete the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL). The Taiwan Representative Office will evaluate the student’s abilities and determine whether they will contribute to the development of Taiwan’s economy and business sector.

The tuition and other expenses are covered up to 40,000 NTD by the Ministry of Education. If the total exceeds 40,000 NTD, the student is responsible for the balance. The awardees will also get a living stipend of 15,000 NTD for undergraduate students and 20,000 NTD for postgraduate and doctoral students. However, take note that recipients are responsible for their insurance payments upon registration.

8. TMU International Graduate Student Scholarship

  • Eligible Degree: Masters, Ph.D.

Taipei Medical University, one of Taiwan’s most prestigious universities, awards scholarships to deserving foreign students. Due to the merit-based nature of this Taiwan scholarship, the applicants’ academic ambitions and abilities will be taken into consideration.

The applicant must meet Taiwan’s eligibility requirements for study as well as the rules set forth by the Ministry of Education for foreign students enrolled in Taiwanese universities. Before a prospective student is considered for a scholarship, they must be accepted to TMU.

Tuition fees will be waived for all scholarship recipients, regardless of program level. Doctoral degree recipients of scholarships will earn 16,000 NTD, while Master’s degree recipients will receive 12,000 NTD.

9. Asia University Scholarship

  • Eligible Degree: Bachelor’s, Masters, Ph.D.

The Asia University in Taichung, Taiwan is a comprehensive university that offers degrees in the social sciences, computer science, engineering, and health. In collaboration with the Center for International Academic Exchange, they also provide scholarships for students from abroad.

Successful applicants may receive a variety of scholarships, each with a specific scholarship amount. All program-level applicants must have received at least an 80 in their previous year to be eligible for scholarship A, while applicants with at least a 75 will be eligible for scholarships B and C.

The recipients of Scholarship A will receive a monthly stipend of 6,000 NTD, waivers for miscellaneous expenses and housing, and free tuition. Recipients of Scholarship B will have their tuition and other costs waived in full. Scholarship A and B recipients in the Ph.D. program, must have at least one paper published and accepted by the Scopus conference within one and a half years of registration. Accepted Ph.D. applicants with experience in teaching Southeast Asian languages are guaranteed to receive Scholarship A. Finally, recipients of scholarship C will only receive a 50 percent tuition fee savings and a waiver of other fees.

10. CGU Scholarships

  • Scholarship Coverage: fully paid tuition and miscellaneous fees, free accommodation, monthly living expenses of 6,000 NTD (Master’s) and 30,000 NTD (Doctoral), and an extra monthly scholarship of 12,000 NTD for outstanding students
  • Eligible Degree: Master’s, Ph.D.

Scholarships for the Master’s and Doctoral Programs are available to students at Chang Gung University. All international applicants who meet the requirements for admission will be considered for the international student scholarships.

There are 25 scholarships offered for each program level. The applicant must first apply to CGU to be considered, and if their TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, or FLPT score satisfies the criteria, they will also be considered for the scholarship. The application, assessment, scholarship, and grant awards are all done on a semester basis. Successful candidates are also required to maintain an average grade of 80% or above in each semester.

Students who receive scholarships are required to enroll in Basic Chinese I during the first semester. Both Master’s and Doctoral level recipients are eligible for free accommodation, full payment of tuition, and waiver of miscellaneous costs. A 6,000 NT living allowance will be given to Master’s degree candidates, while 30,000 NT will be awarded to doctoral scholarship applicants. For exceptional students who received a high GRE Quantitative Reasoning Score, CGU also provides additional scholarships.

      Hello, it looks like National Taiwan University does have some good Physics department. According to their department page, their professors are world-class, at least judging from where they have studied. I do think that if you go to other top universities in Taiwan, you will see the same thing.
