Many high school or college students want to know how long it will take to have a bachelor’s degree. They want to know the time period after which they will have their degree and will be able to get a good job. Some students want to know after how many years they will be taking pictures of their graduation ceremony.  They may want to plan their life and want to know after how many years they will be able to earn a handsome salary.

Typically, a student can earn a bachelor’s degree in three or four years. However, it depends on a number of factors. The education system is different in different countries. We will talk about all these factors focusing on the UK and the US.

Bachelor’s Degree in the US

In the US, a bachelor’s degree means a four years degree. A student has to earn 120 credit hours in order to complete his graduation and get a bachelor’s degree.

A high school graduate enrolled as a full-time student at the university will complete 120 credit hours in four years. So it will take him 4 years to get his bachelor’s degree.

College students who have done an associate’s degree have already completed 60  credit hours. They can complete the remaining 60 credit hours at the university in two years. So they can get a bachelor’s degree in just two years.

If a student is enrolled as a part-time student, it may take more than two years to complete the remaining 60 credit hours. Thus, he will require more than two years to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Bachelor’s degree in the UK

In the United Kingdom, a student can earn a bachelor’s degree one year earlier than in the US.

So, a high school graduate will be able to get a bachelor’s degree in just three years. Students who have done an associate’s degree will be able to get admission in the third year of a bachelor’s degree. They can get a bachelor’s degree in a time period of one year or more depending upon the courses they have studied in the associate’s degree. They may have to study additional courses which will take more than one year to complete the required credit hours.

Other factors

Other factors that decide the time required to get a bachelor’s degree include enrollment status, placement, and academic performance.

If a student is enrolled as a full-time university student he can earn a bachelor’s degree in three years in the UK and four years in the US. However, a part-time student will require more time to complete the required credit hours and get his degree.

Different universities also provide placements to the students. If a student gets a placement in some company, he may spend six months or one year doing the job. Thus depending on the time period of placement, it will take him more time to complete his bachelor’s degree.

If a student shows poor academic performance and fails to pass the required credit hours, he may take more than the normal time required to earn a bachelor’s degree.
