Top Universities for Computer Science in Slovakia

1. The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava

The Slovak University of Technology, established in 1937, is the only university in Slovakia that entered the QS World University Rankings for Computer Science in 2021. It is an excellent institution for computer science in Slovakia and is among the top institutions for higher learning in the country. Since its foundation, it has built seven faculties, offering study programs in various fields, such as Engineering, Architecture, and Management. About 12,000 students make up the annual student body.

Computer Science, or commonly referred to as Informatics in Slovakia, is available at the university. The bachelor program includes three-year and four-year full-time study programs that aim to produce graduates proficient in software systems and processes. Also, these require thesis completion and most programs use the English language for instruction.

Meanwhile, the standard year to complete a Master’s degree program is two years, but the university also offers a three-year study program. Most of the courses offered in the two-year Master’s programs assume that students already have an understanding of the basic concepts and use of Computer Science. Meanwhile, applicants with a bachelor’s degree in a distantly related field have to go through the three-year program, allowing them to start in a Conversion Year. From the Master’s program, students can proceed to Ph.D. studies that can take up to four years. The program provides students the opportunity to explore Applied Informatics and Intelligent Information Systems.

2. Comenius University

Another institution joining the list of best universities for Computer Science in Slovakia is Comenius University. Founded in 1919, the university sits at a historically-rich campus in Bratislava, the country’s capital. It offers over 900 study programs across its 13 faculties and hosts more than 22,000 students. Besides Computer Science, the university offers study programs in Medicine, Law, and Arts.

Comenius University delivers an exceptional computer science curriculum in Slovakia and its students can study all three levels of the Computer Science program. The bachelor’s program is taught mainly in Slavic and requires a three-year study program. Here, students learn about automated information processing and computer systems. At the end of their study, students can proceed to their preferred careers or pursue graduate education.

Meanwhile, the master’s program uses both English and Slavic languages. It’s a two-year full-time program that focuses on teaching students abstract thinking and problem-solving. Students with a bachelor’s degree unrelated to Computer Science may also take this program. Their study duration, however, takes three years since they need to start with a conversion year. Besides coursework, students are expected to complete their thesis and pass the oral state exam. From there, they can proceed to a more research-focused Ph.D. program.

3. University of Žilina

The University of Žilina is among the top universities in Slovakia to study Computer Science and its related courses. Its history started in 1953 when the university was built in Prague under its former name, College of Railways. In 1959, the university moved to Žilina and adopted the name University of Transport. It only changed its name to the University of Žilina in 1996. Presently, it educates more than 7,700 students through its seven faculties.

Computer Science at the bachelor’s level is offered under the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics. Students have the option to learn basic knowledge in the field, as well as industry-relevant skills. Thus, at the end of their education, they can competently take on professional roles in modern information technology industries. The program takes three years of full-time studies.

Students can also pursue master’s studies in Computer Science at the university. In this case, you may choose a more specialized program, such as Information Systems, Intelligent Information Systems, and Applied Network Engineering. The program requires two years of full-time studies. As for the Ph.D. program, students can either choose a full-time three-year, or a part-time four-year program. Full-time students are automatically granted scholarships that cover tuition. All degree programs are taught in English and Slavic.

The university offers Computer Science in three-degree programs. Undergraduate courses are mostly taught in Slovak, with some delivered in the English language. At the end of their studies, students are granted a Bachelor’s degree and are expected to handle complex computer systems.

Students are also encouraged to take a Master’s program, allowing them to improve their skills and knowledge in computer systems. This can be exceptionally helpful if they are looking to rise up in the industry’s career ladder. Moreover, students can proceed to a Ph.D. program after completing their master’s degree.
