Top Universities for Public Health in Hungary

1. University of Szeged

With roots going back as far as the 16th century, the University of Szeged is one of the oldest universities in Hungary. In its current form, the university consists of 12 different faculties that teach a wide variety of subjects, including public health. As a top public health university in Hungary, the University of Szeged ranks in the top 550 universities worldwide, according to the QS World University Rankings.

The university offers medical degrees at all levels, but public health is mostly available as part of a master’s or doctoral program. The department of Health Sciences should be the first place a prospective student goes.

The university is found in the city of Szeged, the third-largest city in the country. As such, there are plenty of things for students at the university to visit and explore. This includes the vast Szeged Zoo, the Botanical Gardens (that are found on the university campus), as well as the Dom Square, which is home to the oldest building in the city.

2. University of Debrecen

The University of Debrecen is the oldest in all of Hungary. Founded in 1538, the university has been conferring degrees without interruption for nearly 500 years. Over this time, the university has earned a stellar reputation, currently ranking in the top 600 universities in the world.

For students interested in studying public health, the Faculty of Public Health should be the first port of call. Founded in 2005, the school offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Each degree focuses on the factors that influence the health of a population, as well as ways to improve the outcomes. Truly, the University of Debrecen is among the best public health universities in Hungary because of this.

3. Semmelweis University

Beyond the classroom, Semmelweis University has a large number of extracurricular activities to take part in. The university is also home to some unique events such as the Semmelweis Ice Carnival which, when it is open during the winter, is the largest open-air skating rink in the city of Budapest.

4. Corvinus University of Budapest

Located in the capital city of Budapest, Corvinus University is another one of the best public health universities in Hungary. The university, one of the smaller universities in the country with a little less than 10,000 students, has a growing reputation within the country as many ministers of finance and prime ministers have studied at this university.

While the university traditionally has specialized in management and business, the university has recently started offering a master’s degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing. In this course, students can learn the theory and practice the skills necessary to evaluate public health policies and how they can be improved.

The university is divided between two campuses in Közgáz and the more recently founded Székesfehérvár campus. Students studying on either campus can benefit from modern facilities and a wide variety of services that improve life on the campus.

5. Eötvös Loránd University

Home to over 16,00 students, the Eötvös Loránd University is one of the most esteemed universities in all of Hungary. With roots as far back as the early 16th century, the college has a long history of academic excellence. This is demonstrated today in world rankings that place the university in the top 650/700 universities in the world, making it one of the best ranking universities in Hungary.

Public Health is taught at a master’s level within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Students with relevant backgrounds can study topics relevant to public health, as well as get insight into health policy, planning, and funding.
