The Federal Republic of Macedonia is a melting pot of history and cultures. Therefore, studying here is a very interesting experience where you’ll get to learn a lot about the area as well. Furthermore, Macedonia is a relatively poor country compared to the rest of Europe, which makes living costs very low for students. Tuition costs will also be significantly lower than in other countries.

Interestingly, Macedonia is very active in attracting international students for its university degrees. Most public universities don’t charge tuition at all and support visa delivery for international students in an accelerated regime. Lots of degrees are offered in English.

Below is our pick of the best options available for a university degree in Macedonia.

Cheapest Universities in Macedonia

1. Saints Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje

Named after Byzantine Christian theologians and missionaries, this is the first public university in the country, founded in 1949. It offers students a large number of departments of study, such as Languages and Letters, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Economics all the way to Computer Science, Engineering and Dentistry.

All in all, there are 23 faculties, 5 research institutes, and 4 public scientific institutions at this cheap university in Macedonia. Around 60,000 domestic students are enrolled in its programs, and also c. 700 international students. They also have 655 students studying in Ph.D. programs.

At the moment there is no readily available information on tuition fees so you will need to enquire directly with the admissions office for your specific program of study.

2. State University of Tetova, Tetovo

Another public university in Macedonia, the University of Tetova was established in 1994 as the first Albanian language higher education institution in Macedonia. It was only recognized as a state university in 2004.

Here you can study in one of thirteen different faculties: Agriculture and Biotechnology, Applied Sciences, Arts, Business Administration, Economics, Food Technology, and Nutrition, Law, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Pedagogy, Philology, Philosophy and Physical Education. All these sections offer degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For example, in the Law Faculty, you can obtain an undergraduate law degree as well as graduate degrees in journalism, political science, and criminology. You can then go on to obtain Master’s degrees and PhDs in these areas too.

At this university as well, there is no mention of tuition fees, so the information would be able to be obtained directly from the admissions office if you were interested in applying to study here.

Whilst domestic students have to compete for admission through exams, international students are recorded outside of these quotas and just need to apply through getting an equivalation of their pre-university studies from the Macedonian Ministry of Education. They also need to prove a level of Macedonian language knowledge. You can enroll in a two-semester course in the Macedonian language before enrolling in the university (this is offered by UGD).

The tuition fee at UGD is 1,000 euro for all faculties per year, except for Medicine which costs 1,500 euro per year. This only applies to foreign students. Additionally, the university estimates living costs to amount to c. 350 euro per month.

The available faculties are Informatics, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Technological Sciences, Technical Sciences, and Social Sciences. In all these, you can study for both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

This university has very little information available in the public domain, probably due to it being very new and still developing (studies began in 2016 on temporary premises).

5. University of Information Science and Technology “St. Paul the Apostle”, Ohrid

At St. Paul University, the focus is firmly on computer science and applied technology and sciences. The university was founded in 2008 and has a large international network with 40 countries represented in the student body.
