Art Schools with No Tuition

1. University of the Arts Bremen (Hochschule für Künste Bremen)

One of the free art schools that offer no tuition, the University of the Arts Bremen is well-known globally. Its expertise is concentrated in Arts and Design, and Music. The university offers cutting-edge programs with courses ranging from studying the Renaissance era to modern arts.

The Faculty of Art and Design offers three major bachelor’s degree programs: Fine Arts, Integrated Design, and Digital Media. In Fine Arts, its curricula focus on the study of Painting, Installation Art, Photography, Drawing, Sculpture, and Media. The Integrated Design program is concentrated on the fundamental elements of design. And the Digital Media program focuses on studying design and technology using modern applications. Moreso, the university has collaborated with one of the prestigious schools in Germany, the University of Bremen, in offering a Digital Media program. Only two programs are offered at the master’s level: Integrated Design and Digital Media. These are more specific programs tailored for students furthering their studies in various fields such as fashion, communication design, media art, and information design.

For students planning to study at the university, be sure that you are equipped with at least a B2 level of German language proficiency as the medium of instruction is German.

2. Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

One of the more diverse universities in Germany is Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. It has a broad spectrum of degrees, including artistic programs focusing on the area of Arts and Music. This public university does not charge any tuition fees to international students, but like other universities in Germany, the institution collects a “social fee” of around 300-350 euros per semester. International students can get part-time work; however, the government only permits students to work for 90 days a year. It is best to not rely alone on the work pay to cover the semestral expenses. With this in mind, students must have a structured plan if they want to pursue an education at the university.

Only a handful of programs are currently available for international students whose main interest is in Art History. Students can take a bachelor’s degree program in Art History, while master’s programs include Art History, Visual Arts, and Liberal Fine Arts. Since students are pursuing art education, Mainz is ideal for getting lots of inspiration. The state offers many cultural and recreational attractions in the region. Furthermore, the institution organizes yearly exhibitions where students get to demonstrate their talents in various fields.

3. University of Bergen

The University of Bergen in Norway offers several academic programs in the field of Arts at the undergraduate and graduate levels. While there are no English-taught bachelor’s programs, students with high proficiency in the Norwegian language can enroll in one of its academic programs. The master’s programs, on the other hand, are taught both in Norwegian and English.

Arts degree programs are handled by the Fine Art, Music, and Design Faculty. Currently offering academic programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels are Art History, Design, Fine Arts, and Digital Culture.

The University of Bergen is among the free art schools with no tuition. Students must be aware that living costs in Norway are expensive; however, because of its free education and easy access to health care, it will at least ease the financial woes of the students. Prospective international students must prepare a substantial amount of funds if opting to continue higher education in the country.

4. The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki)

As for Arts degree-seeking students, inspiration is vital to increase motivation. And the perfect country that has the “whole package” is Finland. With its picturesque landscapes, countless art galleries and museums, abundant natural resources, and welcoming environment, the country could attract the majority of Arts student aspirants.

One of the better-known Arts schools that have been popular among international students is the University of the Arts Helsinki. This modern university has numerous degree programs solely dedicated to the Arts. All higher education levels offer academic programs at the university. For example, a degree in Fine Arts is being offered at all levels. Also, it is worth noting that Finland is a multicultural country; most courses are taught in Swedish, Finnish, and English. But this does not necessarily mean that students need to provide proficiency in all three languages. The student’s degree program to be enrolled in will determine which language needs proof of proficiency.

5. Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague (UMPRUM)

Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague (UMPRUM) is another free art school with no tuition. It has been around since 1885. But it has since evolved into an innovative institution that provides modern degree programs in the Arts discipline. Many art enthusiasts have called Prague one of the most charming cities in Europe, and it has become a more popular destination for Arts students.

International students will have the opportunity to get a “free” education if they choose to study in the Czech language. Bachelor’s programs conducted in the native language are Design, Graphics and Visual Communication, and Fine Arts. All undergraduate programs are to be taken full-time in four years. On the other hand, master’s and doctoral programs in the academy have some unique courses only offered in the region. To obtain a degree, a master’s program must be completed in two years, while a Ph.D. program is typically completed in three years.
