Free Robotics Schools
1. University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (FHWS)
Germany is probably the ideal place for international students to obtain a degree that offers “tuition-free” education. Though many German universities offer free education, most of their study programs are lectured in German, which has hindered many international students. Yet, only a few globally recognized universities in Germany, such as the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, offer undergraduate degree programs entirely conducted in English. Apart from that, the university has a unique model called Twin Programs. Study programs are offered in two mediums of instruction: one program is entirely taught in English, with an equivalent program fully taught in German. Students also have the option to switch courses throughout the program. And students who have completed the program in both languages will be awarded a TWIN certificate indicating that they have completed it in German and English. This will give them an added advantage to their professional portfolio and the opportunity to get a career in Germany and abroad.
One of the unique programs included in the TWIN program is a degree in Robotics offered at the bachelor’s level. This innovative program is typically completed in seven semesters. The first four semesters will focus on computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering fundamentals. The 5th semester will be dedicated to an internship, and the 6th and 7th semesters will focus on lectures in specific areas of robotics and thesis completion.
2. University of Oslo (UiO)
Another free robotics school, the University of Oslo is an elite university in Norway. Being one of the most prestigious universities and the oldest institution in the country, it is undoubtedly the top choice of Scandinavian and European students and even international students across the globe. The university needs no extravagant introduction; it simply is one of the best universities in the world that provides first-class higher education. UiO has been in the education industry for so long that it has a long record of national and international awards and recognitions. Among these are several Nobel prize winners who have lectured at the university.
There are numerous academic programs offered at the university. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences alone provides diverse degree programs. Like, one of its departments, the Department of Informatics offers academic programs from data science and computational science to robotics. An undergraduate degree in Informatics: Robotics and Intelligent Systems is offered in Norwegian. A master’s program under the same name is also offered but entirely conducted in English. Furthermore, the program has two specialization options: Cybernetics and Autonomous Systems and Robotics and Intelligent Systems.
Admissions to UiO can be pretty competitive. Students must have superior knowledge of mathematics, physics, and computer systems. Also, students should consider the living costs in Norway as the university currently does not offer any scholarship programs. Living in the country is expensive, so thorough planning is essential.
3. Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI)
Another public university in Germany with a “tuition-free” education that offers a range of academic programs in the technical and economic disciplines is the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI). A free robotics school, one of its well-known degree programs in Information Technology is an undergraduate program in Robotics. This seven-semester program is conducted in German and has the option to complete a dual-degree program.
A Robotics degree at THI will benefit international students as the university follows a practice-oriented teaching approach to all its programs. This will allow students to take several internships throughout the program. And also, lectures are taught in small groups, which is likely to make student-instructor interactions possible.
4. Leibniz University Hannover
Postgraduate students who have an excellent command of the German language can take the Robotics master’s program at the Leibniz University of Hannover. This German university is one of the oldest universities that offer science and technology degree programs. Since then, the traditional academic disciplines of the field have branched out to provide diverse and interdisciplinary programs. In-demand degree programs belong to the Engineering and Technology departments, such as Robotics degree programs. Only a few robotics programs are offered in Germany, and Leibniz University Hannover provides this program at the master’s level.
Robotics can be deemed a multidisciplinary study; as such, the university has two unique interdisciplinary Robotics programs. These four-semester programs are Geodesy and Geoinformatics, Specialisation in Navigation and Field Robotics, and Mechatronics and Robotics. Both study programs are taught in German, requiring students to have a proficiency of C1 level. These programs are multidisciplinary, and admissions to the program are not limited to bachelor’s degree holders in Robotics. Degree holders in engineering and computer science are eligible for admission.
5. Aalborg University
Aalborg University is another free robotics school and is a leading university in Finland known for its diverse and top-class degree programs. Many international students who prefer to study in the northern region of Europe choose the university primarily because of its quality of education. This is the preferred university for young professionals. International students are comprised mostly of students taking up postgraduate studies.
Engineering and technology programs are offered at the university. Some of the unique degree programs offered are not offered elsewhere, such as a master’s program in Robotics.
