As of 2022, the number of international students at Heidelberg University is around 5,0o0 students, which includes undergraduate and postgraduate students. Having a student body of 25,000 students, the percentage of international students at Heidelberg University is around 20%, which is pretty high for an institution located in Germany. To increase its international student body, this university has put in a lot of effort to connect with universities worldwide.

Establishing nearly 500 exchange programs with foreign institutions, Heidelberg University has approximately 30 university partnerships as well as an international research training group to train prospective research applicants. Unfortunately, the language of instruction of all undergraduate programs and most master’s programs are taught in German, so you need to learn the German language if you want to successfully finish your course.

Tuition Fee at the Heidelberg University for International Students

To study at Heidelberg University, international students must pay a tuition fee of 170 euros at the beginning of each semester, which is approximately $200. This low tuition fee is great news for international students, but please know that this amount is not the only fee that you will need to pay. Application Fee

Since there is no information regarding application fees on the university homepage, we can probably assume that the university’s online application platform does not charge any application fees for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants.

Admissions Requirements for International Students

Heidelberg University requires international applicants whose national language is not German to present proof of German proficiency when applying to any undergraduate or graduate programs. Some of the necessary minimum scores for German proficiency tests are the following:

  • DSH – Level 2
  • German Language Diploma – Level 2
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2
  • Test German As A Foreign Language (TestDaF) – TDN 4
  • Diploma of “Feststellungspüfung”
  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom- ÖSD C2
  • Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule Certificate

The applicants can submit only one of these test scores, and please realize that there could be a certain cutoff deadline for the testing date. 1. Amirana Scholarship

The university selects awardees only from students who are studying medicine or dentistry. In addition, this funding is only available to students and prospective applicants from low to middle-income countries. As previously mentioned, this scholarship program does not cover the entirety of your academic program. Since it only covers your financial costs for a year, try to find other sources of funding while you still have time.

2. Partial Scholarship / Funding

1. Robert and Christine Danziger Scholarship

Only awarding applicants who are applying for the Master’s program, this scholarship program is only available to international students who are trying to get into sociology, political science, or geography. In addition to the academic requirement, applicants must be from Africa, and not only that, you need to have a good grasp of the German language.
