Established in 1821 as the first-ever Mechanic’s Institute, Heriot-Watt has a long history of educating and cultivating scientific, technological, and academic minds. It was established as a university via the Royal Charter in 1966, and the school has expanded significantly across different international regions in recent years. Students wishing to study at any of Heriot-Watt University campuses can receive scholarships to fund their studies.

With its origins as a technical school, more than 7,000 undergraduates and more than 3,000 postgraduates at Edinburgh alone predominantly study in the traditional STEM fields related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Including the international campuses places the total student population over 30,000.

In the UK, Heriot-Watt is organized into six schools, with almost 2,000 faculty members: The School of Engineering, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, The School of Social Sciences, The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, The School of Textiles and Design, and the Edinburgh Business School.

With campuses in Scotland, Dubai, and Malaysia, Heriot-Watt truly is one of the most global universities in the world. The main campus and origins of the university lie in the 380 acres in the southwest area of Riccarton in Edinburgh. Two other Scottish campuses have also been established, the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels and the Orkney Campus for engineering postgraduate students and researchers. Both the Dubai and Malaysia campuses have been established in the new millennium.

The school’s £8.3m endowment benefits student life in many ways, such as supporting research and providing financial assistance. The school has also committed over £128.m recently in investments to upgrade several facilities. A significant portion of the endowment goes to help international students study at this university by awarding Heriot-Watt University scholarships to them.

Heriot-Watt claims many distinguished scientists, businessmen, and engineers as alumni, such as the current Chancellor Robert Buchan and television executive Adam Crozier. Many artists, writers, and musicians once studied at the university as well, including the modern Norwegian electronic DJ, Kygo.
