IELTS Band Requirements for Austrian Universities

1. Modul University Vienna

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 6

Modul University Vienna is a private university that focuses on social and economic development in the fields of public governance and business management. Also, it concentrates on areas of sustainability, new media information technology, and tourism. It started in 1908 as a training institution for hospitality education and tourism. Since 2007, it began providing cutting-edge education in other areas as well. 

The university has four departments and collaborations with the Nanjing Tech University Pujiang Institute for the inclusion of English study programs in tourism and hospitality management. In 2016, Modul University opened a second campus in Dubai. About 60% of its students are non-Austrians and many of its international students studying for master’s degrees. The IELTS band requirement for this university in Austria is Band 6.

2. University of Vienna

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 6.5

The University of Vienna is a state-funded academic institution. It was founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365, so the school has a long and rich history. Today, Universitat Wien is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. Moreover, it is famous for its Humanities programs and has 20 Nobel Prize laureates.

The university has at least 60 locations in Vienna, and its central building is on Ringstraße. It maintains the Vienna Observatory and the Institute of University Sports, which is open for training and recreation to its students. Moreover, the institution has other facilities in other Austrian provinces for research and experiments in the fields of Sports, Biology, and Astrophysics.

3. University of Graz

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 7

The next university in Austria that has an IELTS band requirement is the University of Graz, which is the second oldest and largest academic institution for higher learning in Austria. Archduke Charles II founded it in 1585; however, the Catholic Church controlled the school until 1782 when Emperor John II closed it to gain control. The buildings became an institute for educating medical staff and public servants. In 1827, Emperor Francis I opened it again under the name Charles Francis University.

The university has six faculties in the areas of natural sciences; arts and humanities; law; environmental, regional, and educational sciences; business, economics, and social sciences, and Catholic Theology. Its Faculty of Medicine became an independent institution in 2004 through state legislation.

4. Graz University of Technology

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 7

The Graz University of Technology began in 1811 as a public university by Archduke John of Austria. It offers 18 undergraduate and 33 graduate programs in technology and natural sciences. Moreover, it facilitates Ph.D. training in 14 English-speaking doctoral schools. In 2018, THE World University Rankings ranked it within the 401-500 range.

The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects ranked its computer science and engineering degrees within the 76-100 brackets in 2018. Moreover, it ranked its electrical and electronic engineering programs within the 101-150 range, and its biomedical engineering within the 151-200 brackets. On the other hand, its biotechnology, chemistry, energy science and engineering, chemical engineering, and earth sciences were within the 301-400 brackets. 

5. Johannes Kepler University Linz

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 6

The Johannes Kepler University Linz is a public university in Upper Austria and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, medicine, business, law, and social sciences. Moreover, it hosts the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed the university in the top 41 in 2012 and the top 87 in 2015 under the top 100 universities below 50 years old. 

In 1966, the university started as the “College of Social Sciences, Economics, and Business.” It received the university status in 1975 when it opened the Faculty of Law, in addition to the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering. It got its name in honor of world-famous astronomer Johannes Kepler who taught mathematics near Linz. This university in Austria has a minimum IELTS band requirement of 6.

6. University of Salzburg

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 6

Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron founded the university in 1622 as a public university. It currently has four faculties, namely, Catholic Theology, Cultural and Social Sciences, Law, and Natural Sciences. It closed in 1810 and reopened only in 1962 with the Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Catholic Theology. It added the Faculty of Law in 1965 while the Faculty of Medicine didn’t materialize. The University of Salzburg doesn’t have a single campus, but it occupies various buildings in the city.

7. University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 5.5

The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien is a purely technical institution for applied sciences. It offers 12 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs based on a substantial, practice-oriented scientific foundation. Its focus is on giving an excellent education that centers on enterprise and individual advancement. The school collaborates with industries and businesses to provide students career opportunities to its students and graduates.

Research and development focus on embedded systems and cyber-physical systems; secure services, e-health and mobility; renewable urban energy systems; automation and robotics; and tissue engineering and molecular life science technologies. The university started in 1994 and became Vienna’s first university for applied sciences in 2000. This university in Austria has one of the lowest IELTS Band requirements of 5.5.

8. Vienna University of Economics and Business

IELTS band requirement:

  • Minimum: Band 6

The Vienna University of Economics and Business is the largest university in Austria and Europe that focuses and business and economics. It ranks on top of the business schools on the continent. It started in 1898 as an institution for the professional training of businesspeople to stimulate the economy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It offered programs like business administration, law, and economics that were necessary for export and banking enterprises.

In 2015, the university ranked as topmost 42 in the European Business School Ranking 2014 by the Financial Times. Moreover, it placed as top 44 in the Executive MBA Ranking 2015 by the same organization. The following year, the Financial Times listed the school’s Master in International Management program in the top eight. The Vienna University of Economics and Business is one of the 72 business academic institutions to receive triple accreditation from the London-based Association of MBAs, Tampa-based Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Brussels-based EQUIS.
