Nestled around by the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, the 675-acre James Madison University is a public research university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It started out in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. It changed to State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg in 1914 and became the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg in 1924. The school was once again renamed to Madison College in 1938, in honor of US President James Madison who also resided in Virginia. It finally settled its name to James Madison University in 1976. Wilson Hall, which was named after US President Woodrow Wilson, is seated at the heart of the university’s centerpiece The Quad. The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, a sanctuary in the campus that functions as a woodland garden hosting workshops and exhibits that are open for the public also serves as a research area as well.

The campus is near museums like the Museum of American Frontier Culture, which features historical restorations of American, German, and English farms, and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Heritage Museum which features Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign. The historic Battle of Cedar Creek, which was a critical battle for the Union during the American Civil War, is also near James Madison University. Longs Chapel, a monument honoring Civil War survivors, can also be found in the university.

James Madison University is also at the heart of a vibrant art culture as it operates the Forbes Center, a prime art center in the Shenandoah Valley. It also hosts the Macrock, an independent music festival that serves as a breeding ground for local acts as well as university students.

The James Madison Dukes and its 18 sports teams represent the school in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association. Named in honor of Samuel Page Duke, who served as the second president of the institution, its origin as a women’s school boasts strong support for women athletes up to this day.

Some of its notable graduates include CNN Chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta, editor and physician Marcia Angell, and journalist Lindsay Czarniak.

James Madison University boasts a 90% freshman retention rate and 96% satisfaction rate. It is ranked #6 of 1,408 in Best College Campuses in America and #17 in Best Test Optional Colleges in America according to Niche, while ranks at #6 in Regional Universities South, #7 in Best Undergraduate Teaching, #60 in Best Value Schools according to US News and World Report.

Acceptance Rate at James Madison University

Over 20,000 students attend the university. With over 300 student organizations, around 20% of its student population join fraternities or sororities. Attending James Madison University costs around $7,000 to $24,000 annually on tuition fees, while total expenses are averaging at around $22,000 to $39,000 yearly.

The acceptance rate in James Madison University is at 73% from around 24,500 applications where passing students garner an average SAT score of 1160 to 1320 out of 1600 and ACT range at 24 to 30. Students applying for James Madison University have to settle a $70 application fee.
