Established in 1946, Kookmin University is the first Korean private university founded after the liberation from Japan. It is located in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. There are currently over 2,000 international students attending Kookmin University, making up about 12% of the total student population. KMU currently ranks within the top 10 Korean universities when it comes to the number of international students.

Undergraduate Scholarships

1. Freshmen Admission

This Kookmin University scholarship for international students is aimed at incoming students, in order to lessen their financial burden when arriving at KMU. All freshmen students are deducted 20% of their tuition fees in their first year of study.

This number can go up to 100% depending on their success in the TOPIK or IELTS exam. Applicants that scored over 8.0 on the IELTS, and achieved Level 6 on the TOPIK exam are granted a full scholarship for the first year. Lower scores in the exams also increase the scholarship amount.

2. SungKok Scholarship

The SungKok is a scholarship that is available for all students that are currently enrolled at KMU. It is perhaps the hardest scholarship to get because only a maximum of 14 students is awarded each year. This Kookmin University scholarship is awarded to the best student from each department of the university. Apart from being the best in the department, the student is not allowed to have a GPA lower than 3.8. This means that even if a student is the best in his department, he will not receive the scholarship unless his GPA is higher than the minimum required.

Graduate Scholarships

1. Korean Government Scholarship

The Korean Government Scholarship aims to promote international student mobility to Korea and entice talented foreign individuals to come to the country. Applicants can choose the university they wish to attend, and KMU is also available.

In order to be accepted into the program, applicants need to be foreign nationals, be less than 40 years old, hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree, and have a GPA above 2.64 from the previous institution that they studied in.

Applicants who have a good knowledge of either Korean or English, or both, will be given preference in the selection process, and so will applicants in certain fields that are in demand such as natural sciences and technology.

2. GPA Scholarship

This Kookmin University scholarship for international students awards current students for their achievements and success during their studies. The students who have a 4.0 GPA receive a 50% reduction in their tuition fee, while students with a GPA of 3.75 and 3.50 or higher receive a 30%, and 20% deduction, respectively.

Since tuition fees are fairly high, especially for graduate students, this scholarship is very important, and it can motivate the students to give their best in their studies to qualify for it.

On the other hand, students can lose out on their scholarships if their grades become worse In future semesters. Or, they can fall into a lesser category of the scholarship if, for example, they go from a 4.0 to a 3.5 GPA.
