Founded in 1885, Michigan Technological University is a public university located in Houghton. Its 925-acre campus originally started out as the Michigan Mining School, which initially focused on training students to become engineers specializing in the copper industry that flourished during the time. It soon changed its name to Michigan College of Mines as it opened its doors to other fields of study in 1897. Its continuous growth as an educational institution prompted it to change its name to Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1927 and finally settling to Michigan Technological University soon after. In this article, we will be looking at the acceptance rate at Michigan Tech.

Michigan Tech is also home to the Portage Lake Golf Course, which was sold to the institution for only $1. Mont Ripley, a skiing area known to be the oldest in Michigan, is also centered in the university. Its five schools and colleges, namely the College of Engineering, College of Sciences and Arts, School of Business and Economics, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, and School of Technology are home to around 7,200 students and 220 student organizations. Michigan Tech boasts over $78.7 million in research expenditures in the 2016 – 2017 academic year. Tuition fees in the university range at around $14,000 to $32,000 annually, while total annual expenses are expected to be around $46,000.

Some of its famous alumni include scientist Melvin Calvin, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961 for discovering the Calvin Cycle and John D. Opie, who served as Vice Chairman of the Board and Executive Officer for General Electric.

The Michigan Tech Huskies and its 13 sports teams represent the university in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while its ice hockey team is the sole participant in the NCAA Division I.

Michigan Technological University ranks #15 in America’s Best Value Colleges according to Forbes, while US News and World Report ranked the university at #136 in National Universities. Niche also recognizes the university at #6 out of 129 in Best Colleges for Information Technology in America and #13 out of 511 in Best Colleges with No Application Fee in America.

The acceptance rate at Michigan Technological University is 74% from over 5,500 applicants. Students who were accepted in Michigan Tech got an average SAT score of 1180 to 1350 out of 1600, while the average ACT score is at 26 to 29. Students who are vying for Michigan Technological University do not have to pay an application fee when applying for admissions.
