Northeastern University was established in 1898, as the “Evening Institute for Younger Men” in Boston. In the coming decades, it would host a School of Law as well as the country’s first Automobile Engineering School in 1903. Frank Palmer Speare was the school’s first president and completed the name change to “Northeastern” in 1922. The school is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and is ranked 40th in US News and World Report’s list of best National Universities. Niche ranks the school fiftieth, with an A+ overall grade. The university has an enrollment of 25,000 students in total. This is broken down into 18,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 graduates. With the main campus being in the heart of Boston, roughly 45% of students live on campus, with the remaining percentage living mostly in the city. Along with this, they’re led by roughly 1,600 academic staff for a 14:1 student to faculty ratio. These students and faculty study in over 50 different departments at NU, including Game Design, Architecture, and Bioengineering.

Also, these departments are in several different locations, with the main campus in the Roxbury-South End neighborhoods of Boston. There are satellite campuses in North Carolina, Washington, California, and Toronto. Northeastern boasts nine different schools, with the most popular being the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, Bouvé College of Health Sciences, and the School of Law.

Other than these different campuses, students can study in other universities as well. The study abroad program offers international learning possibilities at over 170 universities. This is a huge opportunity for students to experience the foreign culture by living in different countries.

In the year 2016, Northeastern University had an endowment of $693 million USD. Because of the large endowment, there are about 75% of students to get some form of aid. In the same year, the school offered $253.8 million in Northeastern University scholarships. Many international students as well do receive scholarships from the university.

Northeastern’s large amount of study opportunities have led to many alumni finding careers in politics, business, and more. Alumni include Nikesh Arora (who went on the become the president of SoftBank Corporation), Mo Cowan (US Senator), Maggie Hassan (US Senator and New Hampshire Governor), and Biz Stone (the co-founder of Twitter). Athletes Carlos Peña (baseball) and José Juan Barea (basketball) also hail from the university.
