Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia is a Central European country that has become a mecca for international students. After all, those admitted to public universities need not pay tuition.

As for private schools, the tuition is cheaper compared to the rest of Europe.

With more and more students eyeing Slovenia, here’s a guide that will help you see through the lengthy application process of getting a student visa in Slovenia.

What documents do you need to apply for a student visa in Slovenia?

As part of the EU, Slovenia has a bilateral with fellow EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. Citizens of these countries are not required to get a visa, though they will need to secure a residence permit for the duration of their studies.

As for citizens of other countries, a long-term stay visa (type C) is needed. It is valid for 90 days up to six months.

The requirements for this student visa in Slovenia are as follows:

Completed visa application form

Note: for students under age 18, the form must be signed by your parent or guardian.

Passport

Your passport should have been issued within the last decade. Additionally, it should be valid for three months after your departure.

See to it that your passport has at least two blank pages for the visa.

Passport photo

The visa photo should measure 35 by 45 mm. It should not be more than six months old.

The ideal background for your photo should be a light color.

Head coverings may be worn if it is a religious requirement.

A written opinion from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science

This should also certify that the Ministry is preparing to enter your details into the system.

Travel medical insurance

The minimum coverage amount required is EUR 30,000 or $35,160. It should be valid throughout the entire course of your studies.

Proof of financial means/Certificate of sufficient funds

You will need to submit a bank statement or other documents that prove your ability to shoulder your studies.

If you will study under a scholarship, you will need to prove such through a scholarship letter, contract, etc.

Guarantee letter

If your parent or guardian will fund your studies, you must let them sign this guarantee letter form. This is proof that they can shoulder all the costs of your education, accommodation, etc.

Proof of accommodation

You will need to submit your rental contract or any other document pertaining to your living accommodations in Slovenia.

Certificate of no criminal record

You need to submit the original form, plus a certification of translation to Slovene.

How much money do you need for a Slovenian Student Visa?

The long-term visa C costs EUR 80 ($94.)

Students of the following countries, on the other hand, only need to pay a reduced fee of EUR 35 ($41):

  • Albania
  • Bosnia & Herzegovina
  • Georgia
  • Montenegro
  • North Macedonia
  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Ukraine

As for the residence permit, the cost will depend on where you are at the time of application. If you’re already in Slovenia, you only need to pay EUR 4.5 ($5) for the application and EUR 67 ($79) for the permit.

If you’re outside Slovenia, you will need to pay a higher fee of EUR 13 ($15) for the application and EUR 127 ($149) for the permit issuance.

Regardless of where you file for a permit, you will also need to pay for the cost of the residence card itself (EUR 12 or $14.)

Steps on Applying for a Student Visa in Slovenia

To obtain your Slovenian student visa and residence permit, you need to heed these steps:

1. Apply at a Slovenian institution.

As mentioned, you will need documents pertaining to your studies before you can get a student visa for Slovenia. To get these, you will need to apply and be accepted at a recognized Slovenian university.

2. Collect the necessary visa application documents.

Once you have school-related papers at hand, you may go ahead and gather all the documents needed for the Slovenian student visa application.

3. Book an appointment at the Slovenian embassy or visa processing center.

Upon completing all the visa documents, you may go ahead and schedule your appointment at the embassy.

In areas with no Slovenian consulates, students will need to course the application through visa processing centers such as VFS global.

Since the entire process can go for as long as three months, sending your application early is advisable.

4. Submit your documents and pay the fees.

During your appointment, you will need to hand in the documents listed above to get a student visa for Slovenia.

You will also need to provide your photograph and fingerprints. The details of such will be run through the VIS system.

5. Apply for a temporary residence permit.

Students may obtain a temporary residence permit in or outside Slovenia. The former is usually applicable to students who don’t need a visa to get into the country.

Whatever route you take, you will need to submit the following documents:

  • Completed application form
  • Photocopy of the passport bio page
  • Photo measuring 35 by 45 cm
  • Two fingerprints
  • Proof of enrollment
  • Health insurance
  • Certificate of criminal record from home country (not older than three months and translated to Slovene)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means

The options for getting a residence permit are as follows:

  • Submit the requirements personally through the Slovenian embassy/consulate in your country
  • Mail the following to the regional administrative unit of your university
  • Submit the documents to the regional administrative department yourself

6. Fly to Slovenia.

Once you get to Slovenia, make sure to get your residence permit once it is available.

7. Register your residence.

After receiving your residence permit, you have eight days to register your address at the regional administrative unit.

For this process, you will need to submit these documents:

  • Valid identification document with photograph
  • Evidence of right to reside in your accommodation (proof of ownership, lease contract, or written consent of owner)
