Stony Brook University was started in 1957.  It was initially known as State University on the Long Island between 1957-1962.  The university was built with the purpose of training teachers for secondary schools. The school began its first academic session with 148 students in 1957 at its first campus in Oyster Bay. Stony Brook University graduated its first bachelor’s degree holders in 1961. After the reorganization of the school, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences launched in 1961 was the first faculty in the school, while the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences established in 2007 is the latest faculty in the school. There 12 faculties in the school and the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest faculty in terms of the student population.  The university is on the elite list of schools that has medical and dental schools.

The institution is often held in reverence for its contributions and commitment towards scientific research, and in recognition of that feat, the National Science Foundation in 1988 recognized the school with an award.

The school is a community consisting of people from various backgrounds. 11% of the student population are international students. European and Asian Americans have the highest population in the school, with 37 and 24 percent respectively.

In the past year, based on the findings of the U.S. News & World Report, Stony Brook University was positioned as number 82 among the universities in the US. The Shanghai ranking placed the university between 96-117 positions among the top institute of higher learning in the US and 201-300 position in the world. As regards student life, the institution has over 30 recognized societies on campus. The Statesman, which is the oldest campus newspaper was started at Stony Brook University. Over 50% of the students at the institution reside within the school dormitory and others stay outside.

The Acceptance Rate at Stony Brook University

The acceptance rate at Stony Brook University is relatively low. During the previous admission exercise, 38,000 freshmen applied for admission in the school, but only 18,000 students were offered admission, representing an approximately 42% acceptance rate at Stony Brook University. It is estimated that 3,400 commenced academic sessions out of those offered admission, dropping the enrolment rate to 21% of students offered admission. Also, for the admission, the GPA range of students admitted was between 3.6-4 in a 4.0 grading system. The SAT range of students at the school is between 1260-1410, while the average for a newly admitted student was 1330. Almost all the students admitted finished among the best students in their class.

The school fees for students from the state also differ and it goes a long way in determining the admission and acceptance rate. Students from New York pay $5,870 while students from other states pay $17,810.
