India is home to some of the university systems in the world. Application Requirements for Applying For Bachelor’s in India

Just like most countries, India requires all international students who want to study bachelor’s degree in the country to have a student visa before entry. The validity of the visa will depend on the prescribed duration of the program.

Transcripts of records and other educational certificates will be required upon applying for admissions to any Indian University. The top Indian Universities, usually Central or State Universities, have a different set of requirements for international applicants. These Universities would require certification that the applicant has completed secondary and primary schooling in an education system that prescribed a minimum of full-time schooling of 12 years. Additionally, the educational institution of the applicant must be approved by an accreditation or recognition body.

Entrance exams may be required for applicants especially for highly competitive degree programs and prestigious Indian Universities. With this said, some Indian Universities accept the SAT as an entrance exam.

Bachelor’s Degree Language Requirements for India

Most courses in Indian Universities are taught in English. There is no pressure for international students to learn Hindi to pursue an undergraduate degree in India. Proficiency in the English Language must be certified by official test scores from internationally accepted exams. Widely accepted tests in India are the IELTS and TOEFL exams.

With this said, some institutions will waive the proficiency exam if the applicant’s first language is English. The Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, for example, does not require international students to submit an exam if their first language is English. The minimum score required for prestigious state universities in India is an overall score of 580 for the TOEFL and an overall score of 6.5 for the IELTS.

It is best to coordinate directly with the institution you intend to apply to so you are informed of the accepted English language proficiency exams as well as the minimum score required for the degree program you are interested in.

How to Apply for Bachelor’s Programs in India

The requirements and steps may vary for every Indian Institution. The following steps are standard requirements when applying for an undergraduate degree in India.

1. Completing Application Form

Indian Universities will require international applicants to apply online. Basic application form requirements will include providing basic information as well as submission of qualification documents. 2. Submission of Required Documents

Required documents may vary per institution. With this said, an official document supporting that the applicant has completed 12 years of schooling is required for the applicant to obtain a bachelor’s degree in India. Additionally, official transcripts and academic credentials are required.

Aside from educational transcripts, a valid certificate from an English Proficiency exam might also be required for international students. As mentioned above, TOEFL and IELTS are most commonly accepted across all Indian Universities.

Additional materials such as artistic portfolios might be required for submission depending on the course the applicant is applying for.

Some universities may require a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate.

3. Getting Accepted and Securing a Student Visa

After passing the necessary documents and application form, the applicant must wait to hear back from the admissions office regarding the results of their application.
