University of California, Riverside, commonly referred to as UC Riverside, is a large public university that was founded in 1954. They are one of ten universities in the University of California system, all of which are known for their top-notch academics and competitive admission rates. UC Riverside ranks number 85 in the US News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2019. In this article, we will be looking at the acceptance rate at UC Riverside.

UC Riverside has a total undergraduate enrollment of 20,069. Their student body is highly diverse and reflective of the multi-cultural backbone of California. 40 percent of students are Hispanic, 35 percent are Asian, 12 percent are white and 13 percent are other races. Nine percent of their student body are international students. 53 percent of students are female and 47 percent are male.

UC Riverside is located in a suburban area of Riverside, California, with a large 1,931-acre campus. They also have a branch campus in Palm Desert, California. The university is also located 55 miles from downtown Los Angeles and 40 miles from Disneyland. 69 percent of students live off-campus, and there are no requirements for freshmen to live on campus. The three residence halls and many apartment complexes at UC Riverside are Scottish-themed and named after landmarks in Scotland.

UC Riverside operates on a quarter-based academic calendar. They offer 81 bachelor’s degree programs and 48 graduate degree programs. Some of their most popular programs for undergraduate and graduate study are business, marketing, engineering, and biology. They also offer a medical degree program in partnership with UCLA. Their student-to-faculty ratio is 22:1 and 22.5 percent of their classes have fewer than 20 students. Their freshman retention rate, commonly used to measure student satisfaction, is 90 percent, and their six-year graduation rate is 70 percent. Also, the acceptance rate at UC Riverside is 51%, which is not too high for a University of California school.

Students can participate in over 375 clubs and organizations on campus. The university operates multiple student-run media outlets, including the weekly newspaper The Highlander, literary magazine Mosaic and radio station KUCR. UC Riverside supports 40 fraternities and sororities with 13 percent of undergraduate students participating. Their student government organization and program board are very active and tasked with planning on-campus events including concerts, block parties, and movies.

The UC Riverside Highlanders compete in the NCAA Division I, primarily in the Big West Coast Conference. Students can also participate in a variety of club and intramural sports teams, including flag football, soccer, and volleyball.

Acceptance Rate at UC Riverside

In-state tuition and fees for UC Riverside are approximately $14,000 and out-of-state tuition and fees are around $43,000. While expensive compared to many public schools, 78 percent of full-time undergraduates receive a need-based financial aid award, with the average scholarship being around $18,000. UC Riverside’s endowment is $231 million.

UC Riverside has an acceptance rate of 51 percent, which is higher than many of the other UC schools. Their 2018 freshman class had an average weighted high school GPA of 3.83, a middle 50 percent SAT score ranging from 1090-1300, and a middle 50 percent ACT score ranging from 21-27. UC Riverside’s application deadline is November 30.
