1. Tokyo University of Information Sciences

  • Estimated Acceptance Rate: 90-95%

Founded in 1988, the Tokyo University of Information Sciences (TUIS) is located in Chiba City, Japan. It became the first private university to include “information” as part of its name. This coeducational institution offers programs in various fields including social sciences, nursing, and informatics. International students are eligible for application, and they can submit their documents for evaluation before the following academic year. Over 90% of all applicants are accepted into the University during every admission cycle, which is a very high acceptance rate for a Japanese university. However, note that this rate may vary according to the area of study in which you are interested.

2. Kanazawa University

Kanazawa University was established in 1949 and has since grown in size to accommodate more students. This Japanese university makes our list of high-acceptance rate universities. At the moment, there are over 11,000 students in total (8,000 undergrads and 2,200 postgrads) enrolled in various courses. This population is distributed across two main campuses; Takaramachi and Kakuma campuses. These universities are also divided into 16 schools and three colleges specializing in various areas of study.

3. Nagasaki University

Nagasaki University is another institution with one of the highest acceptance rates in Japan despite it being below 50%. According to statistics, in every group of 100 students, only 46 of them are accepted to the university. As such, you will need to outscore most of your peers in academic results and show brilliance in other areas such as sports and social activities. For instance, U.K. students have the latter reflected in the UCAS points. Some of the main requirements include at least one year of university studies and being knowledgeable in English. The language requirement is to facilitate the teaching process in classes conducted in English.

4. Kagawa University

Kagawa University was founded in 1949 as a public university in Takamatsu, Kagawa in Japan. The university started admitting international students in 1985. With an estimated 45% acceptance rate, Kagawa University is one of the universities in Japan with a high acceptance rate. Currently, the university hosts 6,500 students enrolled in various courses. To be part of Kagawa University, you will need to submit a document showing your performance in the previous school.

5. University of Kitakyushu

Established in 1946, the University of Kitakyushu is located in Kitakyushu. This public University was initially founded to facilitate communication with a nearby American base by acting as a language academy. It has another campus called Gakujustu Kenkyu, situated in Wakamatsu-Ku. It is ranked in the top 4,100 universities globally and is among the most affordable ones in the world. The University of Kitakyushu’s highest level is doctoral degrees.

6. Kagoshima University

Kagoshima University commenced its programs in 1949 after a merger involving various higher education institutes. It is located at the center of Kagoshima, a city hosting over 600,000 people. It is subdivided into ten graduate schools, fourteen research institutes, and nine faculties. The most popular fields include Education, Science, and Medicine. Kyocera Corporation’s founder, Kazuo Inamori, is one of the notable Kagoshima alumni.

7. Kyushu University

Also known as Kyudai, Kyushu University is the fourth-oldest Japanese University. This public institution is one of the research-oriented universities classed as prestigious in Japan. Kyudai started more than three centuries ago as a medical college but currently offers a wide range of arts to medicine-related programs. It is also considered one of the universities in Japan with the highest acceptance rates. With over 18,000 students, the institution provides its teaching and research services in a university hospital, three research facilities, eleven undergrad, and 17 graduate schools.

8. Osaka University

Osaka University started admitting students in 1724 and has since risen to the competition posed by other institutions in the region and the world. Popular programs include dentistry, natural sciences, and chemical engineering. It currently hosts over 23,000 students – 15,000 undergrads and 8,000 graduates – enrolled in different courses.

9. Chubu University

Chubu University concludes this list of Japanese universities with high acceptance rates with a 40-45% acceptance rate. Established in 1964, it started as Chubu Institute of Technology before adopting the current name twenty years later. It has international affiliations in various countries, including the United States. Some of these affiliates include Ohio University, a partner since 1977. If you are interested in joining Chubu, applications are submitted before September.

10. Okayama University

Despite having a high acceptance rate of around 30%, Okayama University is still among the least selective top universities in Japan. This data is enough proof of how competitive most Japanese universities are and the need for above-average results regardless of the institution you are choosing. In a population of 13,000 students, there are 500 international students. It is quite a small percentage given the number of applicants worldwide who send their applications every year. Requirements for joining vary with your career path, but proof of your previous education history is required as an international student.
