Popularly known as UMass, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of its university system. Founded in 1863, the public research and land grant institution started out as the Massachusetts Agricultural College, or ‘Mass Aggie,’ and soon changed to Massachusetts State College in 1931. The campus is powered by a Combined Heat and Power generation facility, a sustainable fuel source that powers the campus. It was recognized by the International District Energy Association with the Sustainable Campus Leadership Award in 2009. It also boasts green buildings with recognition in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The University Museum of Contemporary Art, which features over 150 photographs by pop artist Andy Warhol, is also centered in the university.
UMass boasts strong research expenditures, which amounted to over $220 million in 2017. The National Research Foundation ranks UMass as fourth in research grants, which has a very close ranking with MIT, Harvard, and Boston University. US News and World Report also rank UMass as 16th in its Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs. Film actor and musician Richard Gere, TV host and comedian Bill Cosby, singer-songwriter Natalie Cole, basketball player Julius Erving, and former General Electric CEO and Chairman Jack Welch are some of UMass’ notable graduates.
The UMass Minutemen and Minutewomen and its 19 sports teams represent the institution in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference. Formerly represented by the Statesmen in reference to the founding fathers of the country mainly coming from the state, it was changed to Minutemen and Minutewomen to pay homage to the civilian revolutionaries that played a big role in the early phases of the American Revolution.

Acceptance Rate in UMass is somewhat competitive, with a 60% rate (about 24,200 admitted among 40,700 applicants) according to Forbes. If you want to apply to this excellent university, you need to have a good SAT/ACT score as well as a good GPA.
