The University of Oregon, a public research university in Eugene, spans an area of 295 acres in the state of Oregon. The university offers more than 300 programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. The university was given its name and was formally established in 1876 in a land of just 18 acres. It is divided into five colleges including the College of Arts, Business College, Design, Education, and Honors. Similarly, it houses five professional schools including Accounting, Architecture, Journalism and Communication, Law, Music, Public Policy, and Arts. The main campus that spreads on 295 acres is divided into five mini-campuses: Old Campus, Central Campus, East Campus, South Campus, and Knight Campus. Old Campus contains the oldest buildings of the university that were built in 1873 and is home to the university’s literature department. The Central Campus has most of the academic buildings, an administration building, and some recreational sites for students. The East Campus houses Lorry I. Lokey Science Complex, which contains several science buildings and laboratories. Most of the athletic facilities including Hayward Field, the home ground of Oregon, lie on the south campus. The Knight Campus is still in the construction process and it will house some of the nation’s best research centers.

The University of Oregon has a wide network of libraries that spreads all over the state. The main branch of this network, the Knight Library, is present in the Memorial Quad near the old campus and houses more than 3 million volumes and about 17,000 journals. Besides Knight Library, the University of Oregon has four on-campus libraries and two off-campus libraries in the cities of Charleston and Portland.

Oregon Ducks, the athletic teams of the University of Oregon have won 28 NCCA team championships and 60 NCCA individual championships through the years. Eugene is sometimes known as the “Track Town” due to the incredible performances of Duck’s Football teams and their excellent track and field programs.

Being a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), UO is one of the top public research universities in the nation. Each year, more than $120 million is spent on research endeavors. It is the only university in the state of Oregon to be a part of AAU and is known nationwide for its undergraduate research. About 80 percent of the undergraduate students of UO take part in research activities throughout the academic year.
