South America exudes an alluring and exotic charm that many of us can’t get enough of. Its pull may even be so strong you’d be thinking of getting a degree there. Now, have you thought about pursuing a university program in Brazil?

While there are many top universities in Brazil, it is pretty hard to find English-taught programs there. Most Brazilian institutions primarily use Portuguese as a language of instruction, but we’ll share some schools that have English-taught courses for this article!

Top English-taught Universities in Brazil for International Students

1. Universidade de São Paulo

Established in 1934, the University of São Paulo, or Universidade de São Paulo is Brazil’s leading, world-class institution and the largest public university that offers English-taught programs in Brazil. Indeed, it has earned its place among the world’s best based on international rankings.

This institution offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, most of the activities for undergraduates are delivered in Portuguese; hence, fluency in the language is crucial, if not essential, to earning a bachelor’s degree.

On the other hand, while they also do not offer strictly English-taught, degree-granting programs for graduate students, provide several English-taught courses. These include Quantum Mechanics, Protein Structure and Function, Strategic Planning, and many more. Do note that these are courses only. Thus, you may still have to take some Portuguese courses to complete a program.

2. Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo

The Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo or FGV Sao Paulo School of Business Administration is one of the best English-taught schools in Brazil. It was established in 1954 through the help of the government, the business community, and Michigan State University. It has then evolved into a top institution in business education and one of the country’s most internationalized universities.

Studying at the Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo is a great way to connect with the world while pursuing a degree in Brazil. The school has partnerships with more than 100 institutions worldwide, making sure that you are exposed to opportunities and build connections even as a student. It is also accredited by leading international certification agencies, making the diplomas valid in many nations.

The school offers an undergraduate program in business administration with an option for English modality. In this option, compulsory courses and most electives are taught in English. They also teach the following graduate programs in English: Pre-Experience Master – Master in International Management and Pre-doctoral Master in Public Administration and Government.

3. Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is a leading English-taught Brazilian university, especially in computer science and social sciences. It is also among the best institutions in Latin America. Established in 1927, it welcomes tens of thousands of students every year, making it one of the largest institutions.

If you plan to undertake an exchange or mobility program at this university, you might be interested in their minor in international studies program. It was launched in 2019 and is delivered in either English or Spanish. Courses are at the undergraduate level and may be about different areas of knowledge such as life sciences & health, humanities, etc.

4. Federal University of ABC

  • Degrees taught in English: Bachelor’s (academic mobility), Master’s (academic mobility)

The Federal University of ABC or Universidade Federal do ABC is a public institution and an excellent English-taught university in Brazil that was established in 2005. Despite being relatively young, it is already earning a reputation, especially in undergraduate studies. It is also Brazil’s most impactful university in terms of scientific publications, and the majority, if not all, of its instructors, have a Ph.D.

Currently, the university is in the process of achieving its goals of internationalization. With that, they aim to make their education not just an international reference but also accessible for foreigners and locals alike. Hence, they are offering more English-taught courses.

Exchange students at the Federal University of ABC may access some of their English-taught courses, which include the advanced structure of matter, aeronautics, biophysics, cell biology, cognitive psychology, game theory, virology, etc. As the university continues its internationalization process, more courses may be offered soon.

      Hi, right now, we do not know of any more English taught degrees in Brazil. There’s probably more, but this list is all we have currently. However, we will continue to add to and update this list:)
