Poland is an excellent choice for young people who want to study abroad. In the 2017/2018 school year, around 72,000 foreign students went to universities there. Poland has had a constant economic growth in past years, the universities have a long tradition (since the 14th century), and the costs of living there are low. If you want to enroll in a study programme in the English language, you need to have a minimum of 5.5 IELTS bands in many universities, or 6 and 6.5 in some.

We will introduce you to the requirements of the most popular universities and the general information about them. Some of them are highly ranked in the QS EECA University Ranking (the list of the best 300 universities in Emerging Europe and Central Asia).

IELTS Band Requirements for Poland

1. University of Warsaw

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 5.5

Situated in the capital of Poland, the University of Warsaw is very popular among students because it is the second oldest university in the country and the second largest. It is in the 6th place of QS EECA University Ranking. There are 27 Bachelor and Master study programmes in the English language and 4 Doctoral study programmes. Fields of research are humanities, social, natural, and exact sciences. Currently, 3,000 foreigners are studying at university. All of these foreign students have the required IELTS Band of this Polish university, which is 5.5.

Students can choose what suits them best, a short-term programme (1 semester or a year of study), or full degree programmes (2 or 3 years). The university has bilateral agreements for exchange student programmes with 70 countries, so if you are interested in this option, check if your university is one of 420 academic institutions that have this kind of agreement. 

2. Warsaw University of Technology

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 6

This is the oldest university of technology in Poland, and for 7 years now, it is recognized as the best Polish technical university. On the QS EECA University Ranking, it is in 15th place. It has 19 faculties and 1 college, which covers 37 fields of study including programmes in the English language. International students are very important for the university as it cooperates with 180 foreign universities. Foreign students can join one of many programmes: Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus, Tempus, Leonardo Da Vinci, or Eukla.

3. Medical University of Warsaw

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 6

The Medical University of Warsaw is one of the oldest universities in Poland, with over 200 years long tradition. The programme of studies and research is based on the highest international standards, and this institution is familiar to medical researchers and practisers all over the world. Foreigners can study here after high school or after college and get an MD degree, which is recognized in the EU, USA, Canada, and most other countries. Foreigners can get a degree in Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy. Exchange students can join the Erasmus+ programme, and the university has agreements with 34 international research centers. To study at this medical school in Poland, you need at least 6 IELTS bands.

4. Jagiellonian University

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 5.5

The oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe is situated in Cracow. It was founded in the 14th century, and it has always been an international institution. Ranked as the 7th university of the QS EECA University Ranking, it is the place where many important persons studied, as Nicolas Copernicus and Pope Joh Pole II.  More than 80 fields are studied at 16 faculties that cooperate with academic centers from all over the world. University has research and study programmes, student exchange programmes (Erasmus+, SYLFF), summer school, and various scholarship schemes for foreign students. All of the academic activities are following the reputation of the university.

5. Cracow University of Technology

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 6

Cracow has another university, and it is the Cracow University of Technology. Founded in 1945, it gave many generations of engineers from Poland and countries from all over the world. It is listed as the 83rd university on the QS EECA University Ranking.  The university consists of 8 faculties with 31 study programmes. Foreign students can attend programmes in English in 7 faculties. There are student exchange programmes (Erasmus+ and others) since the university has bilateral agreements with many countries all over the world. It is possible to attend short-term programmes in English, too. This is a good choice for anyone who wants to become an architect, Computer Science and Communication engineer, Electrical engineer, etc. 

6. University of Wroclaw

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 6 for all degrees
  • Minimum of 7 for English Philology and Empirical and Theoretical Linguistics

Wroclaw University is at the 49th place of the QS EECA University Ranking. It has many programmes for international students who usually spend a semester or two there, but some of them also come back to study for a Master’s or Ph.D. degree. Currently, there are 900 foreign students at the university. They can attend 9 Bachelor, 22 Master, and 3 Doctoral programmes, full or part-time. Exchange students can join Erasmus+ or other programmes and choose the field of study. If you are interested in studying at this university in Poland, you’ll need at least 6 in IELTS Band.

7. Wroclaw Medical University

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 6.5

Wroclaw Medical University was founded 200 years ago. It includes 5 faculties, and the 3 of them (faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences) have study programmes in English. Exchange students are welcome as well, and the university is a part of the Erasmus+ programme.

8. University of Gdansk

  • IELTS band requirement: minimum of 5.5

For those who want to be sure they are attending a modern university, the University of Gdansk is the right choice. It focuses on combining respect for the tradition and the interest for the new. This university has 11 faculties educating students in 80 fields of study, with 219 specializations and 8 more programmes that are being considered right now. Every faculty has courses in the English language. University is part of the Erasmus+ programme, and it has programmes for non-EU students. At the moment there are 577 foreign students attending graduate, doctoral and post-graduate studies. Academics are always working on new courses, and the community of the university is constantly growing. 

These are some of the universities in Poland. There are also universities in Lodz, Katowice, Poznan, and Torun which also have programmes in English and are a part of the Erasmus+ programme. Poland is a beautiful country, with kind people and an impressive cultural heritage. Studying in a country with such a long academic tradition can be considered a privilege.
